  有一次尊者阿那律住在舍衛城殊達奴河邊。
  那時,眾多比丘去見尊者阿那律。抵達後,與尊者阿那律一起互相問候。交換應該被互相問候的友好交談後,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐下的那些比丘對尊者阿那律說這個:
  「尊者阿那律以什麼法的已自我修習、已自我多作,已得到大通智呢?」
  「學友們!我以四念住的已自我修習、已自我多作,已得到大通智,哪四個?學友們!這裡,我在身上隨看身地住:熱心的、正知的、有念的,調伏世間中的貪婪、憂後;在諸受上……(中略)在心上……(中略)我在諸法上隨看法地住:熱心的、正知的、有念的,調伏世間中的貪婪、憂後。學友們!以這些四念住的已自我修習、已自我多作,我已得到大通智。
  學友!而且,我以這些四念住的已自我修習、已自我多作,證知下劣法為下劣的;證知中等法為中等的;證知勝妙法為勝妙的。」
SN.52.3/(3) Sutanusuttaṃ
   901. Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā anuruddho sāvatthiyaṃ viharati sutanutīre. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā anuruddhena saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū āyasmantaṃ anuruddhaṃ etadavocuṃ– “katamesaṃ āyasmā anuruddho dhammānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā mahābhiññataṃ patto”ti?
   “Catunnaṃ khvāhaṃ, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā mahābhiññataṃ patto. Katamesaṃ catunnaṃ? Idhāhaṃ, āvuso, kāye kāyānupassī viharāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ– imesaṃ khvāhaṃ, āvuso, catunnaṃ satipaṭṭhānānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā mahābhiññataṃ patto. Imesañca panāhaṃ, āvuso, catunnaṃ satipaṭṭhānānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā hīnaṃ dhammaṃ hīnato abbhaññāsiṃ, majjhimaṃ dhammaṃ majjhimato abbhaññāsiṃ, paṇītaṃ dhammaṃ paṇītato abbhaññāsin”ti.
