那時,眾多
比丘午前時穿衣、拿起衣鉢後,
為了托鉢進入舍衛城。(同法門經[SN.46.52])
「比丘們!這麼說的
其他外道遊行者們應該被這麼回答:『
道友們!凡在心是退縮的時,那時,哪些覺支的
修習是不適時的,哪些覺支的修習是適時的?道友們!又,凡在心是掉舉的時,那時,哪些覺支的修習是不適時的,哪些覺支的修習是適時的?』比丘們!被這麼問,其他外道遊行者們既將會不解答,且更會來到惱害,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那個正如
不在[感官的]境域中那樣。
比丘們!我不見那個:在包括天,在包括魔,在包括梵的世間;在包括沙門婆羅門,在包括天-人的
世代中,凡以這些問題的解答能使心滿意者,除了
如來或如來的弟子,又或從那裡聽聞後以外。
比丘們!凡在心是退縮的時,那時,
寧靜覺支的修習是不適時的;定覺支的修習是不適時的;
平靜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆退縮的心以這些法是難使奮起的。
比丘們!猶如男子想要使小火熾燃,在那裡他投入濕草,同時也投入濕牛糞,也投入濕木柴,也噴水(給與水風),也以塵土撒佈,那位男子能夠使小火熾燃嗎?」「
大德!這確實不是。」
「同樣的,比丘們!凡在心是退縮的時,那時,
寧靜覺支的修習是不適時的;定覺支的修習是不適時的;
平靜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆退縮的心以這些法是難使奮起的。
比丘們!而凡在心是退縮的時,那時,
擇法覺支的修習是適時的;
活力覺支的修習是適時的;
喜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆退縮的心以這些法是易使奮起的。
比丘們!猶如男子想要使小火熾燃,在那裡他投入乾草,同時也投入乾牛糞,也投入乾木柴,也吹風(給與口風),且不以塵土撒佈,那位男子能夠使小火熾燃嗎?」「是的,大德!」
「同樣的,比丘們!凡在心是退縮的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是適時的;活力覺支的修習是適時的;喜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆退縮的心以這些法是易使奮起的。
比丘們!凡在心是掉舉的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是不適時的;活力覺支的修習是不適時的;喜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆掉舉的心以這些法是難使平靜的。
比丘們!猶如男子想要使大火聚熄滅,在那裡他投入乾草,同時也投入乾牛糞,也投入乾木柴,也吹風,且不以塵土撒佈,那位男子能夠使大火聚熄滅嗎?」「大德!這確實不是。」
「同樣的,比丘們!凡在心是掉舉的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是不適時的;活力覺支的修習是不適時的;喜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆掉舉的心以這些法是難使平靜的。

「同樣的,比丘們!凡在心是掉舉的時,那時,寧靜覺支的修習是適時的;定覺支的修習是適時的;平靜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因?比丘們!那顆掉舉的心以這些法是易使平靜的。比丘們!而我說,念是全都適當的。」
SN.46.53/(3) Aggisuttaṃ
234. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu (pariyāyasuttasadisaṃ).
“Evaṃvādino, bhikkhave, aññatitthiyā paribbājakā evamassu vacanīyā– ‘yasmiṃ, āvuso, samaye līnaṃ cittaṃ hoti, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ akālo bhāvanāya, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ kālo bhāvanāya? Yasmiṃ panāvuso, samaye uddhataṃ cittaṃ hoti, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ akālo bhāvanāya, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ kālo bhāvanāyā’ti? Evaṃ puṭṭhā bhikkhave, aññatitthiyā paribbājakā na ceva sampāyissanti, uttariñca vighātaṃ āpajjissanti. Taṃ kissa hetu? Yathā taṃ, bhikkhave, avisayasmiṃ.
“Nāhaṃ taṃ, bhikkhave, passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya yo imesaṃ pañhānaṃ veyyākaraṇena cittaṃ ārādheyya, aññatra tathāgatena vā tathāgatasāvakena vā ito vā pana sutvā.
“Yasmiṃ, bhikkhave, samaye līnaṃ cittaṃ hoti, akālo tasmiṃ samaye passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo samādhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya. Taṃ kissa hetu? Līnaṃ, bhikkhave, cittaṃ taṃ etehi dhammehi dussamuṭṭhāpayaṃ hoti.
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso parittaṃ aggiṃ ujjāletukāmo assa. So tattha allāni ceva tiṇāni pakkhipeyya, allāni ca gomayāni pakkhipeyya, allāni ca kaṭṭhāni pakkhipeyya udakavātañca dadeyya, paṃsukena ca okireyya; bhabbo nu kho so puriso parittaṃ aggiṃ ujjālitun”ti? “No hetaṃ, bhante”.
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ samaye līnaṃ cittaṃ hoti, akālo tasmiṃ samaye passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo samādhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya. Taṃ kissa hetu? Līnaṃ, bhikkhave, cittaṃ taṃ etehi dhammehi dussamuṭṭhāpayaṃ hoti.
