  那時,村長羅西亞去見世尊。抵達後,向世尊問訊後,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐下的村長羅西亞對世尊說這個:
  「大德!這被我聽聞:『沙門喬達摩呵責一切苦行,一向地責備、呵叱一切苦行者、粗弊生活者。』大德!凡他們這麼說:『沙門喬達摩呵責一切苦行,一向地責備、呵叱一切苦行者、粗弊生活者。』者,大德!是否他們會是世尊的所說之說者,而且不會以不實的誹謗世尊,以及會法隨法地解說,而任何如法的種種說不會來到應該被呵責處?」
  「村長!凡他們這麼說:『沙門喬達摩呵責一切苦行,一向地責備、呵叱一切苦行者、粗弊生活者。』者,他們不是我的所說之說者,而且他們以不存在的、虛偽的、不實的誹謗我。
  村長!有這兩個邊(極端),不應該被出家人實行:凡這在諸欲上欲之享樂的實踐:下劣的、粗俗的、一般人的、非聖者的、伴隨無利益的,以及凡這自我折磨的實踐:苦的、非聖者的、伴隨無利益的。村長!不走入這些那些兩個邊後,作眼、作智中道如來現正覺,它轉起寂靜、證智、正覺、涅槃。
  村長!而什麼是那個作眼、作智的中道被如來現正覺,它轉起寂靜、證智、正覺、涅槃?就是這八支聖道,即:正見……(中略)正定。村長!這是那個作眼、作智的中道被如來現正覺,它轉起寂靜、證智、正覺、涅槃。
  村長!有這三種受用諸欲者正存在於現在的世間中,哪三種?
  村長!這裡,某一類受用諸欲者以非法[、以暴力]遍求財物,以非法、以暴力遍求財物後,不使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德。
  村長!又,這裡,某一類受用諸欲者以非法、以暴力遍求財物,以非法、以暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德。
  村長!又,這裡,某一類受用諸欲者以非法、以暴力遍求財物,以非法、以暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,分享,作福德。
  村長!又,這裡,某一類受用諸欲者以法、非法,以暴力,也以非暴力遍求財物,以法、非法,以暴力,也以非暴力遍求財物後,不使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德。

  村長!又,這裡,某一類受用諸欲者以法、以非暴力遍求財物,以法、以非暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,分享,作福德,以及不繫結地、不迷昏頭地、無罪過地、看見過患地、出離慧地受用那些財物。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以非法、以暴力遍求財物,以非法、以暴力遍求財物後,不使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德,這位受用諸欲者以三處應該被呵責。以哪三處應該被呵責?『以非法、以暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被呵責,『不使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第二處應該被呵責,『不分享,不作福德。』以這第三處應該被呵責。村長!這位受用諸欲者應該以這三處被呵責。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以非法、以暴力遍求財物,以非法、以暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德,這位受用諸欲者以二處應該被呵責,以一處應該被讚賞。以哪二處應該被呵責?『以非法、以暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被呵責,『不分享,不作福德。』以這第二處應該被呵責。以哪一處應該被讚賞?『使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這一處應該被讚賞。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這二處應該被呵責,以這一處應該被讚賞。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以非法、以暴力遍求財物,以非法、以暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,分享,作福德,這位受用諸欲者以一處應該被呵責,以二處應該被讚賞。以哪一處應該被呵責?『以非法、以暴力遍求財物。』以這一處應該被呵責。以哪二處應該被讚賞?『使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第一處應該被讚賞,『分享,作福德。』以這第二處應該被讚賞。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這一處應該被呵責,以這二處應該被讚賞。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以法、非法,以暴力,也以非暴力遍求財物,以法、非法,以暴力,也以非暴力遍求財物後,不使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德,這位受用諸欲者以一處應該被讚賞,以三處應該被呵責。以哪一處應該被讚賞?『以法、以非暴力遍求財物。』以這一處應該被讚賞。以哪三處應該被呵責?『以非法、以暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被呵責,『不使自己快樂、喜悅。」以這第二處應該被呵責,『不分享,不作福德。』以這第三處應該被呵責。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這一處應該被讚賞,以這三處應該被呵責。

  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以法、非法,以暴力,也以非暴力遍求財物,以法、非法,以暴力,也以非暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,分享,作福德,這位受用諸欲者以三處應該被讚賞,以一處應該被呵責。以哪三處應該被讚賞?『以法、以非暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被讚賞,『使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第二處應該被讚賞,『分享,作福德。』以這第三處應該被讚賞。以哪一處應該被呵責?『以非法、以暴力遍求財物。』以這一處應該被呵責。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這三處應該被讚賞,以這一處應該被呵責。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以法、以非暴力遍求財物,以法、以非暴力遍求財物後,不使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德,這位受用諸欲者以一處應該被讚賞,以二處應該被呵責。以哪一處應該被讚賞?『以法、以非暴力遍求財物。』以這一處應該被讚賞。以哪二處應該被呵責?『不使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第一處應該被呵責,『不分享,不作福德。』以這第二處應該被呵責。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這一處應該被讚賞,以這二處應該被呵責。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以法、以非暴力遍求財物,以法、以非暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,不分享,不作福德,這位受用諸欲者以二處應該被讚賞,以一處應該被呵責。以哪二處應該被讚賞?『以法、以非暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被讚賞,『使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第二處應該被讚賞。以哪一處應該被呵責?『不分享,不作福德。』以這一處應該被呵責。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這二處應該被讚賞,以這一處應該被呵責。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以法、以非暴力遍求財物,以法、以非暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,分享,作福德,以及繫結地、迷昏頭地、有罪過地、不看見過患地、無出離慧地受用對那些財物,這位受用諸欲者以三處應該被讚賞,以一處應該被呵責。以哪三處應該被讚賞?『以法、以非暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被讚賞,『使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第二處應該被讚賞,『分享,作福德。』以這第三處應該被讚賞。以哪一處應該被呵責?『繫結地、迷昏頭地、有罪過地、不看見過患地、無出離慧地受用那些財物。』以這一處應該被呵責。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這三處應該被讚賞,以這一處應該被呵責。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位受用諸欲者以法、以非暴力遍求財物,以法、以非暴力遍求財物後,使自己快樂、喜悅,分享,作福德,以及不繫結地、不迷昏頭地、無罪過地、看見過患地、出離慧地受用那些財物,這位受用諸欲者以四處應該被讚賞。以哪四處應該被讚賞?『以法、以非暴力遍求財物。』以這第一處應該被讚賞,『使自己快樂、喜悅。』以這第二處應該被讚賞,『分享,作福德。』以這第三處應該被讚賞,『不繫結地、不迷昏頭地、無罪過地、看見過患地、出離慧地受用那些財物。』以這第四處應該被讚賞。村長!這位受用諸欲者以這四處應該被讚賞。[AN.10.91]
  村長!有這三種苦行者、粗弊生活者正存在於現在的世間中,哪三種?村長!這裡,某一類的苦行者、粗弊生活者,以信從在家出家成為無家者:『也許我能證得善法,也許我能作證足以為聖者智見特質過人法。』他使自己苦惱、痛苦,沒證得善法,與沒作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。
  村長!又,這裡,某一類的苦行者、粗弊生活者,以信從在家出家成為無家者:『也許我能證得善法,也許我能作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。』他使自己苦惱、痛苦,證得善法,沒作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。
  村長!又,這裡,某一類的苦行者、粗弊生活者,以信從在家出家成為無家者:『也許我能證得善法,也許我能作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。』他使自己苦惱、痛苦,證得善法,與作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位苦行者、粗弊生活者使自己苦惱、痛苦,沒證得善法,與沒作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法者,村長!這位苦行者、粗弊生活者以三處應該被呵責。以哪三處應該被呵責?『使自己苦惱、痛苦。』以這第一處應該被呵責,『沒證得善法。』以這第二處應該被呵責,『沒作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。』以這第三處應該被呵責。村長!這位苦行者、粗弊生活者以這三處應該被呵責。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位苦行者、粗弊生活者使自己苦惱、痛苦,證得善法,沒作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法者,村長!這位苦行者、粗弊生活者以二處應該被呵責,以一處應該被讚賞。以哪二處應該被呵責?『使自己苦惱、痛苦。』以這第一處應該被呵責,『沒作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。』以這第二處應該被呵責。以哪一處應該被讚賞?『證得善法。』以這一處應該被讚賞。村長!這位苦行者、粗弊生活者以這二處應該被呵責,以這一處應該被讚賞。
  村長!在那裡,凡這位苦行者、粗弊生活者使自己苦惱、痛苦,證得善法,與作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法者,村長!這位苦行者、粗弊生活者以一處應該被呵責,以二處應該被讚賞。以哪一處應該被呵責?『使自己苦惱、痛苦。』以這一處應該被呵責。以哪二處應該被讚賞?『證得善法。』以這第一處應該被讚賞,『作證足以為聖者智見特質的過人法。』以這第二處應該被讚賞。村長!這位苦行者、粗弊生活者以這一處應該被呵責,以這二處應該被讚賞。
  村長!有這三種直接可見的、即時的、請你來看的、能引導的、應該被智者各自經驗的滅盡,哪三種?
  凡貪染者為了貪,意圖對自己的傷害,也意圖對別人的傷害,也意圖對兩者的傷害,在貪被捨斷時,既不意圖對自己的傷害,也不意圖對別人的傷害,也不意圖對兩者的傷害,滅盡是直接可見的、即時的、請你來看的、能引導的、應該被智者各自經驗的。
  凡憤怒者為了瞋,意圖對自己的傷害,也意圖對別人的傷害,也意圖對兩者的傷害,在瞋被捨斷時,既不意圖對自己的傷害,也不意圖對別人的傷害,也不意圖對兩者的傷害,滅盡是直接可見的、即時的、請你來看的、能引導的、應該被智者各自經驗的。
  凡愚癡者為了癡,意圖對自己的傷害,也意圖對別人的傷害,也意圖對兩者的傷害,在癡被捨斷時,既不意圖對自己的傷害,也不意圖對別人的傷害,也不意圖對兩者的傷害,滅盡是直接可見的、即時的、請你來看的、能引導的、應該被智者各自經驗的。
  村長!這是三種直接可見的、即時的、請你來看的、能引導的、應該被智者各自經驗的滅盡。」
  在這麼說時,村長羅西亞對世尊說這個:
  「太偉大了,大德!……(中略)請世尊記得我為優婆塞,從今天起已終生歸依。」
SN.42.12. Rāsiyasuttaṃ
   364. Atha kho rāsiyo gāmaṇi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho rāsiyo gāmaṇi bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “sutaṃ metaṃ, bhante, ‘samaṇo gotamo sabbaṃ tapaṃ garahati, sabbaṃ tapassiṃ lūkhajīviṃ ekaṃsena upavadati upakkosatī’ti. Ye te, bhante, evamāhaṃsu– ‘samaṇo gotamo sabbaṃ tapaṃ garahati, sabbaṃ tapassiṃ lūkhajīviṃ ekaṃsena upavadati upakkosatī’ti, kacci te, bhante, bhagavato vuttavādino, na ca bhagavantaṃ abhūtena abbhācikkhanti, dhammassa cānudhammaṃ byākaronti, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaṃ ṭhānaṃ āgacchatī”ti? “Ye te, gāmaṇi, evamāhaṃsu– ‘samaṇo gotamo sabbaṃ tapaṃ garahati, sabbaṃ tapassiṃ lūkhajīviṃ ekaṃsena upavadati upakkosatī’ti, na me te vuttavādino, abbhācikkhanti ca pana maṃ te asatā tucchā abhūtena”.
   “Dveme, gāmaṇi, antā pabbajitena na sevitabbā– yo cāyaṃ kāmesu kāmasukhallikānuyogo hīno gammo pothujjaniko anariyo anatthasaṃhito, yo cāyaṃ attakilamathānuyogo dukkho anariyo anatthasaṃhito. Ete te, gāmaṇi, ubho ante anupagamma majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati. Katamā ca sā, gāmaṇi, majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā– cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati? Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṃ– sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṃ kho sā, gāmaṇi, majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā– cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati.
   “Tayo kho me, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogino santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. Katame tayo? Idha, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī adhammena bhoge pariyesati, sāhasena adhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasena na attānaṃ sukheti na pīṇeti na saṃvibhajati na puññāni karoti. Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasena. Adhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati na puññāni karoti. Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasena. Adhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti saṃvibhajati puññāni karoti.
   “Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenapi asāhasenapi. Dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasenapi asāhasenapi na attānaṃ sukheti, na pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti. Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenapi asāhasenapi. Dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasenapi asāhasenapi attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti.    “Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī dhammena bhoge pariyesati asāhasena. Dhammena bhoge pariyesitvā asāhasena na attānaṃ sukheti, na pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti. Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī dhammena bhoge pariyesati asāhasena. Dhammena bhoge pariyesitvā asāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti. Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī dhammena bhoge pariyesati asāhasena. Dhammena bhoge pariyesitvā asāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti saṃvibhajati puññāni karoti. Te ca bhoge gadhito mucchito ajjhopanno anādīnavadassāvī anissaraṇapañño paribhuñjati. Idha pana, gāmaṇi, ekacco kāmabhogī dhammena bhoge pariyesati asāhasena. Dhammena bhoge pariyesitvā asāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti saṃvibhajati puññāni karoti. Te ca bhoge agadhito amucchito anajjhopanno ādīnavadassāvī nissaraṇapañño paribhuñjati.

Na attānaṃ sukheti na pīṇetīti, iminā dutiyena ṭhānena gārayho. Na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karotīti, iminā tatiyena ṭhānena gārayho. Ayaṃ, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogī imehi tīhi ṭhānehi gārayho.
   “Tatra, gāmaṇi, yvāyaṃ kāmabhogī adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasena, adhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti.    “Tatra, gāmaṇi, yvāyaṃ kāmabhogī adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasena, adhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasena attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti saṃvibhajati puññāni karoti. Ayaṃ, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogī ekena ṭhānena gārayho, dvīhi ṭhānehi pāsaṃso. Katamena ekena ṭhānena gārayho? Adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenāti, iminā ekena ṭhānena gārayho.    “Tatra, gāmaṇi, yvāyaṃ kāmabhogī dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenapi asāhasenapi, dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasenapi asāhasenapi na attānaṃ sukheti, na pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti. Ayaṃ, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogī ekena ṭhānena pāsaṃso, tīhi ṭhānehi gārayho. Katamena ekena ṭhānena pāsaṃso? Dhammena bhoge pariyesati asāhasenāti, iminā ekena ṭhānena pāsaṃso. Katamehi tīhi ṭhānehi gārayho? Adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenāti, iminā paṭhamena ṭhānena gārayho. Na attānaṃ sukheti, na pīṇetīti, iminā dutiyena ṭhānena gārayho. Na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karotīti, iminā tatiyena ṭhānena gārayho. Ayaṃ, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogī iminā ekena ṭhānena pāsaṃso, imehi tīhi ṭhānehi gārayho.
   “Tatra, gāmaṇi, yvāyaṃ kāmabhogī dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenapi asāhasenapi, dhammādhammena bhoge pariyesitvā sāhasenapi asāhasenapi attānaṃ sukheti pīṇeti, na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karoti. Ayaṃ, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogī dvīhi ṭhānehi pāsaṃso, dvīhi ṭhānehi gārayho. Katamehi dvīhi ṭhānehi pāsaṃso? Dhammena bhoge pariyesati asāhasenāti, iminā paṭhamena ṭhānena pāsaṃso. Attānaṃ sukheti pīṇetīti, iminā dutiyena ṭhānena pāsaṃso Katamehi dvīhi ṭhānehi gārayho? Adhammena bhoge pariyesati sāhasenāti, iminā paṭhamena ṭhānena gārayho. Na saṃvibhajati, na puññāni karotīti, iminā dutiyena ṭhānena gārayho. Ayaṃ, gāmaṇi, kāmabhogī imehi dvīhi ṭhānehi pāsaṃso, imehi dvīhi ṭhānehi gārayho.
