  住在王舍城竹林中。那時,尊者大迦葉去見世尊。……(中略)世尊對在一旁坐下的尊者大迦葉說這個:「迦葉!請你教誡比丘們,請你為比丘們作法說,迦葉!我或你應該教誡比丘們,迦葉!我或你應該為比丘們作法說。」
  「大德!現在,比丘們是難順從糾正者,具備難作勸導法者、不忍耐者、不善於理解教誡者。大德!凡任何在諸善法上沒有信者、在諸善法上沒有慚者、在諸善法上沒有愧者、在諸善法上沒有活力者、在諸善法上沒有慧者,對他,不論日或夜到來,在諸善法上僅減損能被預期,而非增長。
  大德!猶如在黑暗側,不論日或夜到來,月亮的容色被減損、圓相被減損、光亮被減損、直徑與圓周被減損。同樣的,大德!凡任何在諸善法上沒有信者、沒有慚者(中略)……沒有愧者……沒有活力者……在諸善法上沒有慧者,不論日或夜到來,對他,在諸善法上僅減損能被預期,非增長。
  大德!『無信的人(男子個人)』,這是衰退;大德!『無慚的人』,這是衰退;大德!『無愧的人』,這是衰退;大德!『怠惰的人』,這是衰退;大德!『惡慧的人』,這是衰退;大德!『易怒的人』,這是衰退;大德!『懷怨恨的人』,這是衰退;大德!『沒有教誡的比丘們』,這是衰退。
  大德!凡任何在諸善法上有信者、在諸善法上有慚者、在諸善法上有愧者、在諸善法上有活力者、在諸善法上有慧者,對他,不論日或夜到來,在諸善法上僅增長能被預期,非減損。
  大德!猶如在明亮側,不論日或夜到來,月亮的容色增長、圓相增長、光亮增長、直徑與圓周增長。同樣的,大德!凡任何在諸善法上有信者……(中略)有慚者……有愧者……有活力者、在諸善法上有慧者,對他,不論日或夜到來,在諸善法上僅增長能被預期,非減損。
  大德!『有信的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『有慚的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『有愧的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『不怠惰的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『有慧的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『不易怒的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『不懷怨恨的人』,這是不衰退;大德!『有教誡比丘們』,這是不衰退。」
  「迦葉!好!好!迦葉!凡任何在諸善法上沒有信者……(中略)沒有慚者……沒有愧者……沒有活力者、在諸善法上沒有慧者,對他,不論日或夜到來,在諸善法上僅減損能被預期,而非增長。

SN.16.7. Dutiya-ovādasuttaṃ
   150. Rājagahe viharati veḷuvane. Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ mahākassapaṃ bhagavā etadavoca– “ovada, kassapa, bhikkhū; karohi, kassapa, bhikkhūnaṃ dhammiṃ kathaṃ. Ahaṃ vā, kassapa bhikkhū ovadeyyaṃ tvaṃ vā; ahaṃ vā bhikkhūnaṃ dhammiṃ kathaṃ kareyyaṃ tvaṃ vā”ti.
   “Dubbacā kho, bhante, etarahi bhikkhū, dovacassakaraṇehi dhammehi samannāgatā akkhamā appadakkhiṇaggāhino anusāsaniṃ. Yassa kassaci, bhante, saddhā natthi kusalesu dhammesu, hirī natthi kusalesu dhammesu, ottappaṃ natthi kusalesu dhammesu, vīriyaṃ natthi kusalesu dhammesu, paññā natthi kusalesu dhammesu, tassa yā ratti vā divaso vā āgacchati, hāniyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no vuddhi.
   “Seyyathāpi, bhante, kāḷapakkhe candassa yā ratti vā divaso vā āgacchati, hāyateva vaṇṇena, hāyati maṇḍalena, hāyati ābhāya, hāyati ārohapariṇāhena. Evameva kho, bhante, yassa kassaci saddhā natthi kusalesu dhammesu …pe… hirī natthi… ottappaṃ natthi vīriyaṃ natthi… paññā natthi… kusalesu dhammesu tassa yā ratti vā divaso vā āgacchati, hāniyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no vuddhi.
   “‘Assaddho purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘ahiriko purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘anottappī purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘kusīto purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘duppañño purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘kodhano purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘upanāhī purisapuggalo’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ; ‘na santi bhikkhū ovādakā’ti, bhante, parihānametaṃ.

Evameva kho, bhante, yassa kassaci saddhā atthi kusalesu dhammesu… hirī atthi …pe… ottappaṃ atthi… vīriyaṃ atthi… paññā atthi kusalesu dhammesu tassa yā ratti vā divaso vā āgacchati, vuddhiyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no parihāni.

   “Sādhu sādhu, kassapa. Yassa kassaci, kassapa, saddhā natthi kusalesu dhammesu …pe… hirī natthi… ottappaṃ natthi… vīriyaṃ natthi… paññā natthi kusalesu dhammesu tassa yā ratti vā divaso vā āgacchati, hāniyeva pāṭikaṅkhā kusalesu dhammesu, no vuddhi.
   “Seyyathāpi, kassapa, kāḷapakkhe candassa yā ratti vā divaso vā āgacchati, hāyateva vaṇṇena …pe… hāyati ārohapariṇāhena.
