SN.8.12. Vaṅgīsasuttaṃ
220. Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā vaṅgīso sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso acira-arahattappatto hutvā vimuttisukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedī tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imā gāthāyo abhāsi–
“Kāveyyamattā vicarimha pubbe, gāmā gāmaṃ purā puraṃ;
Athaddasāma sambuddhaṃ, saddhā no upapajjatha.
“So me dhammamadesesi, khandhāyatanadhātuyo.
Tassāhaṃ dhammaṃ sutvāna, pabbajiṃ anagāriyaṃ.
“Bahunnaṃ vata atthāya, bodhiṃ ajjhagamā muni;
Bhikkhūnaṃ bhikkhunīnañca, ye niyāmagataddasā.
“Svāgataṃ vata me āsi, mama buddhassa santike.
Tisso vijjā anuppattā, kataṃ buddhassa sāsanaṃ.
“Pubbenivāsaṃ jānāmi, dibbacakkhuṃ visodhitaṃ;
Tevijjo iddhipattomhi, cetopariyāyakovido”ti.
Vaṅgīsasaṃyuttaṃ samattaṃ.
Tassuddānaṃ–
Nikkhantaṃ arati ceva, pesalā atimaññanā;
Ānandena subhāsitā, sāriputtapavāraṇā.
Parosahassaṃ koṇḍañño, moggallānena gaggarā.
Vaṅgīsena dvādasāti.
漢巴經文比對(莊春江作):
「聚落及家家(SA.1217);經歷諸城邑(GA)」,南傳作「從村到村從城到城」(gāmā gāmaṃ purā puraṃ)。《顯揚真義》說,尊者婆耆舍出家前是誦咒後以手指敲死者的頭就知道他出生在何處者,他從村到村等次第遊行,與約五百位學生一起舍衛城。當他遇到佛陀時,佛陀讓他看出生地獄、天界的[死者]頭[骨],他都正確地(tatheva)回答,然後讓他看諸漏已滅盡者的頭[骨],他一再誦咒後以手指敲,但沒看見出生處(nibbattaṭṭhānaṃ),佛陀說他知道,於是,他以學習佛陀的咒語而隨佛陀出家,大師(佛陀)為他講解三十二行相業處,當他順逆作意,毘婆舍那增大後,次第到達阿羅漢狀態(大意)。另,南傳《小部/法句經420偈註》也有關於尊者婆耆舍相同的記載。
「凡到達決定的看見者」(ye niyāmagataddasā),菩提比丘長老英譯為「他到達與看見固定進路」(Who have reached and seen the fixed course),並解說「決定」(niyāma),指「正性決定」(the fixed course of rightness)。另外,本經只講到比丘、比丘尼,而《小部》〈長老偈〉相當的偈頌則說到「男人、女人、比丘、比丘尼」四眾弟子。
