  起源於舍衛城。
  那時,尊者阿難去見世尊。抵達後,向世尊問訊後,在一旁坐下。世尊對在一旁坐下的尊者阿難說這個:「阿難!你也喜歡舍利弗嗎?」
  「大德!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?大德!尊者舍利弗是賢智者;大德!尊者舍利弗是大慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是博慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是捷慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是速慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是利慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是洞察慧者[SN.8.7, MN.111];大德!尊者舍利弗是少欲者;大德!尊者舍利弗是知足者;大德!尊者舍利弗是獨居者;大德!尊者舍利弗是離群眾者;大德!尊者舍利弗是活力已發動者;大德!尊者舍利弗是告誡他人者;大德!尊者舍利弗是被告誡的能容忍者;大德!尊者舍利弗是舉罪者;大德!尊者舍利弗是惡的呵責者。大德!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?」
  「這是這樣,阿難!這是這樣,阿難!
  阿難!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?阿難!尊者舍利弗是賢智者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是大慧者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是博慧者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是捷慧者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是速慧者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是利慧者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是洞察慧者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是少欲者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是知足者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是獨居者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是離群眾者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是活力已發動者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是解說者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是言語的容忍者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是舉罪者;阿難!尊者舍利弗是惡的呵責者。阿難!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?」
  那時,當對尊者舍利弗的稱讚被說時,蘇尸摩天子被大天子眾圍繞,去見世尊。抵達後,向世尊問訊後,在一旁站立。在一旁站立的蘇尸摩天子對世尊說這個:
  「這是這樣,世尊!這是這樣,善逝!大德!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?大德!尊者舍利弗是賢智者;大德!尊者舍利弗是大慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是博慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是捷慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是速慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是利慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是洞察慧者;大德!尊者舍利弗是少欲者;大德!尊者舍利弗是知足者;大德!尊者舍利弗是獨居者;大德!尊者舍利弗是離群眾者;大德!尊者舍利弗是活力已發動者;大德!尊者舍利弗是告誡他人者;大德!尊者舍利弗是被告誡的能容忍者;大德!尊者舍利弗是舉罪者;大德!尊者舍利弗是惡的呵責者。大德!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?
  大德!又,不論我到哪個天子眾中,就多聽到這樣的聲音:『尊者舍利弗是賢智者;尊者舍利弗是大慧者;尊者舍利弗是博慧者;尊者舍利弗是捷慧者;尊者舍利弗是速慧者;尊者舍利弗是利慧者;尊者舍利弗是洞察慧者;尊者舍利弗是少欲者;尊者舍利弗是知足者;尊者舍利弗是獨居者;尊者舍利弗是離群眾者;尊者舍利弗是活力已發動者;尊者舍利弗是告誡他人者;尊者舍利弗是被告誡的能容忍者;尊者舍利弗是舉罪者;尊者舍利弗是惡的呵責者。』大德!確實,對非愚者、惡性者、愚昧者、心顛倒者,誰不會喜歡尊者舍利弗?」
  那時,當對尊者舍利弗的稱讚被說時,蘇尸摩天子的天子眾成為悅意的、喜悅的、生起-喜悅的,出現種種輝耀的容色
  猶如美麗的、純正的、八個切割面的、作工細緻的、放在黃毛布上的琉璃寶珠,輝耀、照亮、照耀。同樣的,當對尊者舍利弗的稱讚被說時,蘇尸摩天子的天子眾成為悅意的、喜悅的、生起喜-喜悅的,出現種種輝耀的容色。
  猶如熟練的鍛工子非常有技術地的在鍛冶爐打造的、放在黃毛布上的閻浮河產的金之金幣,輝耀、照亮、照耀。同樣的,當對尊者舍利弗的稱讚被說時,蘇尸摩天子的天子眾成為悅意的、喜悅的、生起喜-喜悅的,出現種種輝耀的容色。
  猶如在秋天季節晴朗無雲的天空,在破曉時太白星輝耀、照亮、照耀。同樣的,當對尊者舍利弗的稱讚被說時,蘇尸摩天子的天子眾成為悅意的、喜悅的、生起喜-喜悅的,出現種種輝耀的容色。
  猶如在秋季節天晴朗無雲的天空,天空當太陽上升時,擊破一切來到天空的黑闇後,輝耀、照亮、照耀。同樣的,當對尊者舍利弗的稱讚被說時,蘇尸摩天子的天子眾成為悅意的、喜悅的、生起喜-喜悅的,出現種種輝耀的容色。
  那時,蘇尸摩天子關於尊者舍利弗在世尊的面前說這個偈頌
  「有名的『賢智者』,舍利弗是不憤怒者,
   少欲者、溫雅者、已調御者,仙人是被大師帶來稱讚者。」
  那時,世尊關於尊者舍利弗以偈頌回答蘇尸摩天子:
  「有名的『賢智者』,舍利弗是不憤怒者,
   少欲者、溫雅者、已調御者,已善調御者等待死時。」
SN.2.29/(9). Susimasuttaṃ
   110. Sāvatthinidānaṃ Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ bhagavā etadavoca– “tuyhampi no, ānanda, sāriputto ruccatī”ti?
   “Kassa hi nāma, bhante, abālassa aduṭṭhassa amūḷhassa avipallatthacittassa āyasmā sāriputto na rucceyya? Paṇḍito, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto Mahāpañño, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Puthupañño, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Hāsapañño, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Javanapañño, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Tikkhapañño, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Nibbedhikapañño, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Appiccho, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Santuṭṭho, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Pavivitto, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Asaṃsaṭṭho, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Āraddhavīriyo, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto.    “Evametaṃ ānanda, evametaṃ, ānanda! Kassa hi nāma, ānanda, abālassa aduṭṭhassa amūḷhassa avipallatthacittassa sāriputto na rucceyya? Paṇḍito, ānanda, sāriputto. Mahāpañño, ānanda, sāriputto. Puthupañño, ānanda, sāriputto. Hāsapañño, ānanda, sāriputto. Javanapañño, ānanda, sāriputto. Tikkhapañño, ānanda, sāriputto. Nibbedhikapañño, ānanda, sāriputto. Appiccho, ānanda, sāriputto.    Atha kho susimo devaputto āyasmato sāriputtassa vaṇṇe bhaññamāne mahatiyā devaputtaparisāya parivuto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho susimo devaputto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca–
   “Evametaṃ bhagavā, evametaṃ, sugata. Kassa hi nāma, bhante, abālassa aduṭṭhassa amūḷhassa avipallatthacittassa āyasmā sāriputto na rucceyya? Paṇḍito, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Mahāpañño, bhante, puthupañño, bhante, hāsapañño, bhante, javanapañño, bhante, tikkhapañño, bhante, nibbedhikapañño, bhante, appiccho, bhante, santuṭṭho, bhante, pavivitto, bhante, asaṃsaṭṭho, bhante, āraddhavīriyo, bhante, vattā, bhante, vacanakkhamo, bhante, codako, bhante, pāpagarahī, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto. Kassa hi nāma, bhante, abālassa aduṭṭhassa amūḷhassa avipallatthacittassa āyasmā sāriputto na rucceyya?
   “Ahampi hi, bhante, yaññadeva devaputtaparisaṃ upasaṅkamiṃ, etadeva bahulaṃ saddaṃ suṇāmi– ‘paṇḍito āyasmā sāriputto; mahāpañño āyasmā, puthupañño āyasmā, hāsapañño āyasmā, javanapañño āyasmā, tikkhapañño āyasmā, nibbedhikapañño āyasmā, appiccho āyasmā, santuṭṭho āyasmā, pavivitto āyasmā, asaṃsaṭṭho āyasmā, āraddhavīriyo āyasmā, vattā āyasmā, vacanakkhamo āyasmā, codako āyasmā, pāpagarahī āyasmā sāriputto’ti Kassa hi nāma, bhante, abālassa aduṭṭhassa amūḷhassa avipallatthacittassa āyasmā sāriputto na rucceyyā”ti?
   Atha kho susimassa devaputtassa devaputtaparisā āyasmato sāriputtassa vaṇṇe bhaññamāne attamanā pamuditā pītisomanassajātā uccāvacā vaṇṇanibhā upadaṃseti.
   “Seyyathāpi nāma maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato paṇḍukambale nikkhitto bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca; evamevaṃ susimassa devaputtassa devaputtaparisā āyasmato sāriputtassa vaṇṇe bhaññamāne attamanā pamuditā pītisomanassajātā uccāvacā vaṇṇanibhā upadaṃseti.
   “Seyyathāpi nāma nikkhaṃ jambonadaṃ dakkhakammāraputta-ukkāmukhasukusalasampahaṭṭhaṃ paṇḍukambale nikkhittaṃ bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca; evamevaṃ susimassa devaputtassa devaputtaparisā āyasmato sāriputtassa vaṇṇe bhaññamāne attamanā pamuditā pītisomanassajātā uccāvacā vaṇṇanibhā upadaṃseti.
   “Seyyathāpi nāma saradasamaye viddhe vigatavalāhake deve rattiyā paccūsasamayaṃ osadhitārakā bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca; evamevaṃ susimassa devaputtassa devaputtaparisā āyasmato sāriputtassa vaṇṇe bhaññamāne attamanā pamuditā pītisomanassajātā uccāvacā vaṇṇanibhā upadaṃseti.
   “Seyyathāpi nāma saradasamaye viddhe vigatavalāhake deve ādicco nabhaṃ abbhussakkamāno sabbaṃ ākāsagataṃ tamagataṃ abhivihacca bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca; evamevaṃ susimassa devaputtassa devaputtaparisā āyasmato sāriputtassa vaṇṇe bhaññamāne attamanā pamuditā pītisomanassajātā uccāvacā vaṇṇanibhā upadaṃseti.
   Atha kho susimo devaputto āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ ārabbha bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi–
   “Paṇḍitoti samaññāto, sāriputto akodhano;
   Appiccho sorato danto, satthuvaṇṇābhato isī”ti.
   Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ ārabbha susimaṃ devaputtaṃ gāthāya paccabhāsi–
   “Paṇḍitoti samaññāto, sāriputto akodhano;
   Appiccho sorato danto, kālaṃ kaṅkhati sudanto” ti.
漢巴經文比對(莊春江作):
  「身光增明(SA.1306);其身光曜,倍更殊常;顏貌威光轉熾盛(GA)」,南傳作「出現種種輝耀的容色」(uccāvacā vaṇṇanibhā upadaṃseti),菩提比丘長老英譯為「表現種種光輝的顏色」(displayed diverse lustrous colours)。按:《顯揚真義》說,出藍光的[天子]更藍(nīlaṭṭhānaṃ atinīlaṃ);黃的更黃;紅的更紅;白的更白(odātaṭṭhānaṃ accodātanti)。
  「等待死時」(kālaṃ kaṅkhati),菩提比丘長老英譯為「他等待時間(到)」(he awaits the time)。按:《顯揚真義》說,他希求(pattheti)般涅槃的時間,因為諸漏已滅盡者既不喜歡死亡,也不希求生命,他希求[般涅槃的]時間,就像站著領取日薪的人(divasasaṅkhepaṃ vetanaṃ gahetvā ṭhitapuriso)那樣。另參看Thag.654(Mi.11, 4.結生感受)。
