  被我這麼聽聞
  有一次世尊與大比丘僧團一起在憍薩羅進行遊行。
  那時,世尊離開道路後,在某處顯露微笑。
  那時,尊者阿難想這個:
  「什麼因、什麼,世尊有微笑的顯露呢?諸如來不無原因地顯露微笑。」
  那時,尊者阿難置(作)衣服到一邊肩膀、向世尊合掌鞠躬後,對世尊說這個:
  「大德!什麼因、什麼緣,世尊有微笑的顯露呢?世尊不無原因地顯露微笑的。」
  「阿難!從前,在這個地方是名叫威額林額的村落城鎮:繁榮的,同時也富裕的,以及人多的、人雜亂的。阿難!迦葉世尊、阿羅漢遍正覺者依止威額林額村落城鎮而住。阿難!這裡是迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的園林,這裡是坐著的迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者教誡比丘僧團處。」
  那時,尊者阿難摺大衣成四折後,對世尊說這個:「大德!那樣的話,請世尊坐在這裡,這個地方將被兩位阿羅漢、遍正覺者使用。」
  世尊在設置的座位坐下。坐下後,世尊召喚尊者阿難:
  「阿難!從前,在這個地方名叫威額林額的村落城鎮:繁榮的,同時也富裕的,以及人多的、人雜亂的。阿難!迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者依止威額林額村落城鎮而住。阿難!這裡是迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的園林,這裡是坐著的迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者教誡比丘僧團處。(282)
  阿難!在威額林額村落城鎮有位名叫額低葛勒的陶匠,是迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的奉獻者、最高的奉獻者,阿難!額低葛勒陶匠有位朋友、親愛的朋友,名叫周低波勒的學生婆羅門。那時,額低葛勒陶匠召喚周低波勒學生婆羅門:
  『親愛的周低波勒!我們走,我們將去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的。』
  阿難!在這麼說時,周低波勒學生婆羅門對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『停(夠了)!親愛的額低葛勒!然而,以那位禿頭假沙門的看見有什麼?』
  阿難!第二次又……(中略)。
  阿難!第三次,額低葛勒陶匠又對周低波勒學生婆羅門說這個:『親愛的周低波勒!我們走,我們將去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的。』
  阿難!第三次,周低波勒學生婆羅門又對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『停!親愛的額低葛勒!然而,以那位那位禿頭假沙門的看見有什麼?』
  『親愛的周低波勒!那樣的話,拿擦背用具與肥皂粉後,讓我們到河沐浴。』
  『是的,親愛的!』阿難!周低波勒學生婆羅門回答額低葛勒陶匠。
  阿難!那時,額低葛勒陶匠與周低波勒學生婆羅門拿擦背用具與肥皂粉後,到河沐浴。(283)
  阿難!那時,額低葛勒陶匠召喚周低波勒學生婆羅門:『親愛的周低波勒!這不遠處有迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的園林,親愛的周低波勒!我們走,我們將去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的。』
  阿難!在這麼說時,周低波勒學生婆羅門對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『停!親愛的額低葛勒!然而,以那位那位禿頭假沙門的看見有什麼?』
  阿難!第二次又……(中略)。
  阿難!第三次,額低葛勒陶匠又對周低波勒學生婆羅門說這個:
  『親愛的周低波勒!這不遠處有迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的園林,親愛的周低波勒!我們走,我們將去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的。』
  阿難!第三次,周低波勒學生婆羅門又對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『停!親愛的額低葛勒!然而,以那位那位禿頭假沙門的看見有什麼?』
  阿難!那時,額低葛勒陶匠在腰帶上抓住周低波勒學生婆羅門後,說這個:『親愛的周低波勒!這不遠處有個迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的園林,親愛的周低波勒!我們走,我們將去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的確實是好的。』
  阿難!那時,周低波勒學生婆羅門{轉去}[解開]腰帶後,對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『停!親愛的額低葛勒!然而,以那位那位禿頭假沙門的看見有什麼?』
  阿難!那時,額低葛勒陶匠在已沐浴的頭髮上抓住周低波勒學生婆羅門後,說這個:『親愛的周低波勒!這不遠處有個迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的園林,親愛的周低波勒!我們走,我們將去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的確實是好的。』
  阿難!那時,周低波勒學生婆羅門想這個:『實在不可思議啊,先生!實在未曾有啊,先生!確實是因為這位一直是劣等出生的額低葛勒陶匠竟然認為我們已沐浴的頭髮應該被抓住,我認為這確實將不是低級的。』對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『親愛的額低葛勒!到上限?』
  『親愛的周低波勒!到上限。而,像這樣,因為對那位迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的看見被我認定好的是好的。』
  『親愛的額低葛勒!那樣的話,請你放開,讓我們走。』(284)
  阿難!那時,額低葛勒陶匠與周低波勒學生婆羅門去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者。抵達後,額低葛勒陶匠向迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者問訊後,在一旁坐下。周低波勒學生婆羅門與迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者一起互相問候。交換應該被互相問候的友好交談後,在一旁坐下。阿難!在一旁坐下的額低葛勒陶匠對迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者說這個:『大德!這位周低波勒學生婆羅門是我的朋友、親愛的朋友,請世尊為這位教導法。』
  阿難!那時,迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者對額低葛勒陶匠與周低波勒學生婆羅門以法說開示、勸導、鼓勵、使歡喜。阿難!那時,被迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者以法說開示、勸導、鼓勵、使歡喜的額低葛勒陶匠與周低波勒學生婆羅門歡喜、隨喜迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者所說後,從座位起來、向迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者問訊、作右繞後,離開。(285)
  阿難!那時,周低波勒學生婆羅門對額低葛勒陶匠說這個:『親愛的額低葛勒!你一直聽聞這個法,卻不將從在家出家成為無家者嗎?』
  『親愛的周低波勒!你知道我扶養已盲的年老父母,不是嗎?』
  『親愛的額低葛勒!那樣的話,我將從在家出家成為無家者。』
  阿難!那時,額低葛勒陶匠與周低波勒學生婆羅門去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者。抵達後,向迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者問訊後,在一旁坐下。阿難!在一旁坐下的額低葛勒陶匠對迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者說這個:『大德!這位周低波勒學生婆羅門是我的朋友、親愛的朋友,請世尊使這位出家。』
  周低波勒學生婆羅門得到在迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的面前出家得到具足戒。(286)
  阿難!那時,迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者在周低波勒學生婆羅門已受具足戒不久,在已受具足戒半個月,在威額林額如其意地住後,向波羅奈出發遊行。次第進行遊行地抵達波羅奈。阿難!在那裡,迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者就住在波羅奈仙人落下處的鹿林。
  阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記聽聞:『迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者抵達波羅奈,住在波羅奈仙人落下處的鹿林。』
  阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記準備一輛輛吉祥車、登上吉祥車後,為了見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,以一輛輛吉祥車,以國王威力盛況從波羅奈出發,以車輛一直走到車輛所及之地、再下車後,就步行去見迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者。抵達後,向迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者問訊後,在一旁坐下。阿難!那時,迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者對在一旁坐下的迦尸國王居記以法說開示、勸導、鼓勵,使歡喜。阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記被迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者以法說開示、勸導、鼓勵、使歡喜後對迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者說這個:
  『大德!請世尊與比丘僧團一起同意我明天的食事。』
  阿難!迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者以沈默狀態同意。
  阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記知道迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者同意後,從座位起來、向迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者問訊、作右繞後離開。
  阿難!那時,那夜過後,迦尸國王居記在自己的住處使淡黃容器的(?)粳米飯、挑除黑粒的飯、各種咖哩、各種配菜之勝妙的硬食、軟食準備後,使[人]為迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者通知時間:『大德!是時間,食事已完成。』(287)
  阿難!那時,迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者午前時穿衣、拿起衣鉢後,去迦尸國王居記的住處。抵達後,與比丘僧團一起在設置的座位坐下。阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記以勝妙的硬食、軟食親手款待以佛陀為上首的比丘僧團,使滿足。
  阿難!那時,對已食、手離鉢的迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者,迦尸國王居記取某個低的坐具後,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐下的迦尸國王居記對迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者說這個:
  『大德!請世尊同意我:在波羅奈雨季安居,像這樣,僧團將有奉獻。』
  『停!大王!雨季安居已被我同意。』
  阿難!第二次又……。阿難!第三次迦尸國王居記又對迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者說這個:『大德!請世尊同意我:在波羅奈雨季安居,像這樣,僧團將有奉獻。』
  『停!大王!雨季安居已被我同意。』
  阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記:『迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者不同意我:在波羅奈雨季安居。』就成為變異,成為憂鬱。
  阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記對迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者說這個:『大德!有任何其它比我更奉獻者嗎?』
  『大王!有個名叫威額林額的村落城鎮,在那裡,有位名叫額低葛勒的陶匠,他是我的奉獻者、最高的奉獻者。大王!而,迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者不同意我:在波羅奈雨季安居。你就有變異,有憂鬱,這位額低葛勒陶匠沒有那個,而且將來也沒有。大王!額低葛勒陶匠已歸依佛、法、僧團,大王!額低葛勒陶匠是離殺生者,離未被給與的拿取者,離邪淫者,離妄語者,離榖酒、果酒、酒放逸處者,大王!額低葛勒陶匠在佛上具備不壞淨,在法上具備不壞淨,在僧團上具備不壞淨,具備聖者喜愛的諸戒,大王!額低葛勒陶匠在苦上是無疑惑者,在苦上是無疑惑者,在苦上是無疑惑者,在導向苦滅道跡上是無疑惑者,大王!額低葛勒陶匠是一日一食者、梵行者、持戒者、善法者,大王!額低葛勒陶匠已放下珠寶、黃金,已離金銀,大王!額低葛勒陶匠已放下杵(鋤頭?),不以自己的手挖掘土地,凡有破壞的堤防(斜面)或老鼠形成的[土],他以扁擔搬運、作容器後,這麼說:「在這裡,凡想要者,放置米回報袋(?),或豆回報袋,或豌豆回報袋後,凡想要者,請拿走那個。」大王!額低葛勒陶匠扶養已盲的年老父母,大王!額低葛勒陶匠以五下分結的滅盡,成為化生者,在那裡入了究竟涅槃,為不從那個世間返還者。(288)
  大王!有這一次,我住在名叫威額林額的村落城鎮。大王!那時,我午前時穿衣、拿起衣鉢後,去見額低葛勒陶匠的父母。抵達後,我對額低葛勒陶匠的父母說這個:「那麼,這位祥瑞兒去哪裡?」「大德!你的奉獻者已出去,在裡面從甕取飯、從釜取咖哩(湯)後,請你食用。」大王!那時,我從甕取飯、從釜取咖哩、食用後,從座位起來後離開。大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠去見父母。抵達後,對父母說這個:「誰從甕內取飯、從釜取咖哩、食用後,從座位起來後離開呢?」「兒子!迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者從甕內取飯、從釜取咖哩、食用後,從座位起來後離開。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠想這個:「確實是我的利得,確實是我的善得的:凡迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者對我這麼信賴。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠不離開喜、樂半個月,他的父母七天。(289)
  大王!有這一次,我就住在名叫威額林額的村落城鎮那裡。大王!那時,我午前時穿衣、拿起衣鉢後,去見額低葛勒陶匠的父母。抵達後,我對額低葛勒陶匠的父母說這個:「那麼,這位祥瑞兒去哪裡?」「大德!你的奉獻者已出去,在裡面從鍋取粥、從釜取咖哩後,請你食用。」大王!那時,我從鍋取粥、從釜取咖哩、食用後,從座位起來後離開。大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠去見父母。抵達後,對父母說這個:「誰從鍋取粥、從釜取咖哩、食用後,從座位起來後離開呢?」「兒子!迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者從鍋取粥、從釜取咖哩、食用後,從座位起來後離開。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠想這個:「確實是我的利得,確實是我的善得的:凡迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者對我這麼信賴。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠不離開喜、樂半個月,他的父母七天。(290)
  大王!有這一次,我就住在名叫威額林額的村落城鎮那裡那裡,當時,小屋漏雨(下雨),大王!那時,我召喚比丘們:「比丘們!請你們去額低葛勒陶匠的住處找草。」大王!在這麼說時,那些比丘們對我說這個:「大德!額低葛勒陶匠的住處沒有草,但他的住處有草屋頂。」「比丘們!請你們去額低葛勒陶匠住處,請你們拆(作)屋頂的草。」大王!那時,那些比丘拆額低葛勒陶匠住處屋頂的草。大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠的父母對那些比丘說這個:「誰拆住處屋頂的草?」「姊妹!是比丘們。迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的小屋漏雨。」「大德!請你們帶走,賢面們!請你們帶走。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠去見父母。抵達後,對父母說這個:「誰拆住處屋頂的草?」「兒子!是比丘們。迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者的小屋漏雨。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠想這個:「確實是我的利得,確實是我的善得的:凡迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者對我這麼信賴。」大王!那時,額低葛勒陶匠不離開喜、樂半個月,他的父母七天。大王!那時,住處空屋頂持續全部三個月整,天沒下大雨。大王!而,額低葛勒陶匠是像這樣的。』
  『大德!是額低葛勒陶匠的利得,是額低葛勒陶匠的善得的:凡迦葉世尊、阿羅漢、遍正覺者這麼信賴。』(291)
  阿難!那時,迦尸國王居記為額低葛勒陶匠派遣約五百車米、淡黃容器的粳米飯與適合那個的咖哩。阿難!那時,那些國王的男子去見額低葛勒陶匠後,說這個:『大德!這些約五百車米、淡黃容器的粳米飯與適合那個的咖哩被迦尸國王居記派遣,大德!請你們接受它們。』『國王有許多工作、許多應該被做的 ,對我是足夠的,令它就成為國王的。』
  阿難!又,你會這麼想:『那時的周低波勒學生婆羅門當然是其他人。』阿難!但這不應該被看作這樣,我是那時的周低波勒學生婆羅門。」
  世尊說這個,悅意的尊者阿難歡喜世尊的所說。(292)
  額低葛勒經第一終了。
4. Rājavaggo
MN.81/(1) Ghaṭikārasuttaṃ
   282. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṃ carati mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ. Atha kho bhagavā maggā okkamma aññatarasmiṃ padese sitaṃ pātvākāsi. Atha kho āyasmato ānandassa etadahosi– “ko nu kho hetu, ko paccayo bhagavato sitassa pātukammāya? Na akāraṇena tathāgatā sitaṃ pātukarontī”ti. Atha kho āyasmā ānando ekaṃsaṃ cīvaraṃ katvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṃ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo bhagavato sitassa pātukammāya? Na akāraṇena tathāgatā sitaṃ pātukarontī”ti. “Bhūtapubbaṃ, ānanda, imasmiṃ padese vegaḷiṅgaṃ nāma gāmanigamo ahosi iddho ceva phīto ca bahujano ākiṇṇamanusso. Vegaḷiṅgaṃ kho, ānanda, gāmanigamaṃ kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho upanissāya vihāsi. Idha sudaṃ, ānanda, kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa ārāmo ahosi. Idha sudaṃ, ānanda, kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho nisinnako bhikkhusaṅghaṃ ovadatī”ti. Atha kho āyasmā ānando catugguṇaṃ saṅghāṭiṃ paññapetvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “tena hi, bhante, bhagavā nisīdatu ettha. Ayaṃ bhūmipadeso dvīhi arahantehi sammāsambuddhehi paribhutto bhavissatī”ti. Nisīdi bhagavā paññatte āsane. Nisajja kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi–
   “Bhūtapubbaṃ, ānanda, imasmiṃ padese vegaḷiṅgaṃ nāma gāmanigamo ahosi iddho ceva phīto ca bahujano ākiṇṇamanusso. Vegaḷiṅgaṃ kho, ānanda, gāmanigamaṃ kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho upanissāya vihāsi. Idha sudaṃ, ānanda, kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa ārāmo ahosi. Idha sudaṃ, ānanda, kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho nisinnako bhikkhusaṅghaṃ ovadati.
   283. “Vegaḷiṅge kho, ānanda, gāmanigame ghaṭikāro nāma kumbhakāro kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa upaṭṭhāko ahosi aggupaṭṭhāko. Ghaṭikārassa kho, ānanda, kumbhakārassa jotipālo nāma māṇavo sahāyo ahosi piyasahāyo. Atha kho, ānanda, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro jotipālaṃ māṇavaṃ āmantesi– ‘āyāma, samma jotipāla, kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissāma. Sādhusammatañhi me tassa bhagavato dassanaṃ arahato sammāsambuddhassā’ti. Evaṃ vutte, ānanda, jotipālo māṇavo ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ etadavoca– ‘alaṃ, samma ghaṭikāra. Kiṃ pana tena muṇḍakena samaṇakena diṭṭhenā’ti? Dutiyampi kho, ānanda …pe… tatiyampi kho, ānanda, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro jotipālaṃ māṇavaṃ etadavoca– ‘āyāma, samma jotipāla, kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissāma. Sādhusammatañhi me tassa bhagavato dassanaṃ arahato sammāsambuddhassā’ti. Tatiyampi kho, ānanda, jotipālo māṇavo ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ etadavoca– ‘alaṃ, samma ghaṭikāra. Kiṃ pana tena muṇḍakena samaṇakena diṭṭhenā’ti? ‘Tena hi, samma jotipāla, sottisināniṃ ādāya nadiṃ gamissāma sināyitun’ti. ‘Evaṃ sammā’ti kho, ānanda, jotipālo māṇavo ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa paccassosi. Atha kho, ānanda, ghaṭikāro ca kumbhakāro jotipālo ca māṇavo sottisināniṃ ādāya nadiṃ agamaṃsu sināyituṃ’.
   284. “Atha kho, ānanda, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro jotipālaṃ māṇavaṃ āmantesi– ‘ayaṃ, samma jotipāla, kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa avidūre ārāmo. Āyāma, samma jotipāla, kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissāma. Sādhusammatañhi me tassa bhagavato dassanaṃ arahato sammāsambuddhassā’ti. Atha kho, ānanda, jotipālo māṇavo ovaṭṭikaṃ vinivaṭṭetvā ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ etadavoca– ‘alaṃ, samma ghaṭikāra. Kiṃ pana tena muṇḍakena samaṇakena diṭṭhenā’ti? Atha kho, ānanda, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro jotipālaṃ māṇavaṃ sīsaṃnhātaṃ kesesu parāmasitvā etadavoca – ‘ayaṃ, samma jotipāla, kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa avidūre ārāmo. Āyāma, samma jotipāla, kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissāma Sādhusammatañhi me tassa bhagavato dassanaṃ arahato sammāsambuddhassā’ti. Atha kho, ānanda, jotipālassa māṇavassa etadahosi– ‘acchariyaṃ vata, bho, abbhutaṃ vata, bho! Yatra hi nāmāyaṃ ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro ittarajacco samāno amhākaṃ sīsaṃnhātānaṃ kesesu parāmasitabbaṃ maññissati; na vatidaṃ kira orakaṃ maññe bhavissatī’ti; ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ etadavoca– ‘yāvatādohipi, samma ghaṭikārā’ti? ‘Yāvatādohipi, samma jotipāla. Tathā hi pana me sādhusammataṃ tassa bhagavato dassanaṃ arahato sammāsambuddhassā’ti. ‘Tena hi, samma ghaṭikāra, muñca; gamissāmā’ti.
   285. “Atha kho, ānanda, ghaṭikāro ca kumbhakāro jotipālo ca māṇavo yena kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Jotipālo pana māṇavo kassapena bhagavatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.    286. “Atha kho, ānanda, jotipālo māṇavo ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ etadavoca– ‘imaṃ nu tvaṃ, samma ghaṭikāra, dhammaṃ suṇanto atha ca pana agārasmā anagāriyaṃ na pabbajissasī’ti? ‘Nanu maṃ, samma jotipāla, jānāsi, andhe jiṇṇe mātāpitaro posemī’ti? ‘Tena hi, samma ghaṭikāra, ahaṃ agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajissāmī’ti.    287. “Atha kho, ānanda, kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho acirūpasampanne jotipāle māṇave aḍḍhamāsupasampanne vegaḷiṅge yathābhirantaṃ viharitvā yena bārāṇasī tena cārikaṃ pakkāmi. Anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena bārāṇasī tadavasari. Tatra sudaṃ, ānanda, kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati isipatane migadāye Assosi kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā– ‘kassapo kira bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho bārāṇasiṃ anuppatto bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati isipatane migadāye’ti. Atha kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā bhadrāni bhadrāni yānāni yojāpetvā bhadraṃ yānaṃ abhiruhitvā bhadrehi bhadrehi yānehi bārāṇasiyā niyyāsi mahaccarājānubhāvena kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ dassanāya. Atha kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā tassā rattiyā accayena sake nivesane paṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ paṭiyādāpetvā paṇḍupuṭakassa sālino vigatakāḷakaṃ anekasūpaṃ anekabyañjanaṃ, kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa kālaṃ ārocāpesi– ‘kālo, bhante, niṭṭhitaṃ bhattan’ti.
   288. “Atha kho, ānanda, kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena kikissa kāsirañño nivesanaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi saddhiṃ bhikkhusaṅghena. Atha kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā buddhappamukhaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi. Atha kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ bhuttāviṃ onītapattapāṇiṃ aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Adhivuttho me vassāvāso’ti. Atha kho, ānanda, kikissa kāsirañño ‘na me kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho adhivāseti bārāṇasiyaṃ vassāvāsan’ti ahudeva aññathattaṃ ahu domanassaṃ. Atha kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā kassapaṃ bhagavantaṃ arahantaṃ sammāsambuddhaṃ etadavoca– ‘atthi nu kho, bhante, añño koci mayā upaṭṭhākataro’ti?
   “‘Atthi, mahārāja, vegaḷiṅgaṃ nāma gāmanigamo. Tattha ghaṭikāro nāma kumbhakāro; so me upaṭṭhāko aggupaṭṭhāko. Tuyhaṃ kho pana, mahārāja, na me kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho adhivāseti bārāṇasiyaṃ vassāvāsanti attheva aññathattaṃ, atthi domanassaṃ. Tayidaṃ ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa natthi ca na ca bhavissati. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gato, dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gato, saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gato. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro pāṇātipātā paṭivirato, adinnādānā paṭivirato, kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato, musāvādā paṭivirato, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato, dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato, saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgato, ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro dukkhe nikkaṅkho, dukkhasamudaye nikkaṅkho, dukkhanirodhe nikkaṅkho, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya nikkaṅkho. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro ekabhattiko brahmacārī sīlavā kalyāṇadhammo. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro nikkhittamaṇisuvaṇṇo apetajātarūparajato Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro pannamusalo na sahatthā pathaviṃ khaṇati. Yaṃ hoti kūlapaluggaṃ vā mūsikukkaro vā taṃ kājena āharitvā bhājanaṃ karitvā evamāha– “ettha yo icchati taṇḍulapaṭibhastāni vā muggapaṭibhastāni vā kaḷāyapaṭibhastāni vā nikkhipitvā yaṃ icchati taṃ haratū”ti. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro andhe jiṇṇe mātāpitaro poseti. Ghaṭikāro kho, mahārāja, kumbhakāro pañcannaṃ orambhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā opapātiko tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā.
   289. “‘Ekamidāhaṃ mahārāja, samayaṃ vegaḷiṅge nāma gāmanigame viharāmi. Atha khvāhaṃ, mahārāja, pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa mātāpitaro tenupasaṅkamiṃ; upasaṅkamitvā ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa mātāpitaro etadavocaṃ– “handa, ko nu kho ayaṃ bhaggavo gato”ti? “Nikkhanto kho te, bhante, upaṭṭhāko antokumbhiyā odanaṃ gahetvā pariyogā sūpaṃ gahetvā paribhuñjā”ti. Atha khvāhaṃ, mahārāja, kumbhiyā odanaṃ gahetvā pariyogā sūpaṃ gahetvā paribhuñjitvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkamiṃ. Atha kho, mahārāja, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro yena mātāpitaro tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā mātāpitaro etadavoca– “ko kumbhiyā odanaṃ gahetvā pariyogā sūpaṃ gahetvā paribhuñjitvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkanto”ti? “Kassapo, tāta, bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho kumbhiyā odanaṃ gahetvā pariyogā sūpaṃ gahetvā paribhuñjitvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkanto”ti? Atha kho te, mahārāja, bhikkhū ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa āvesanaṃ uttiṇamakaṃsu. Atha kho, mahārāja, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa etadahosi– “lābhā vata me, suladdhaṃ vata me, yassa me kassapo bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho evaṃ abhivissattho”ti. Atha kho, mahārāja ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ aḍḍhamāsaṃ pītisukhaṃ na vijahati, sattāhaṃ mātāpitūnaṃ. Atha kho, mahārāja, āvesanaṃ sabbantaṃ temāsaṃ ākāsacchadanaṃ aṭṭhāsi, na devotivassi. Evarūpo ca, mahārāja, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro’ti. ‘Lābhā, bhante, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa, suladdhā, bhante, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa yassa bhagavā evaṃ abhivissattho’”ti.
   292. “Atha kho, ānanda, kikī kāsirājā ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa pañcamattāni taṇḍulavāhasatāni pāhesi paṇḍupuṭakassa sālino tadupiyañca sūpeyyaṃ. Atha kho te, ānanda, rājapurisā ghaṭikāraṃ kumbhakāraṃ upasaṅkamitvā etadavocuṃ– ‘imāni kho, bhante, pañcamattāni taṇḍulavāhasatāni kikinā kāsirājena pahitāni paṇḍupuṭakassa sālino tadupiyañca sūpeyyaṃ. Tāni, bhante, paṭiggaṇhathā’ti. ‘Rājā kho bahukicco bahukaraṇīyo. Alaṃ me! Raññova hotū’ti. Siyā kho pana te, ānanda, evamassa– ‘añño nūna tena samayena jotipālo māṇavo ahosī’ti. Na kho panetaṃ, ānanda, evaṃ daṭṭhabbaṃ. Ahaṃ tena samayena jotipālo māṇavo ahosin”ti.

  《破斥猶豫》說,「出家後做了什麼呢?作應該被菩薩作的(Yaṃ bodhisattehi kattabbaṃ)……增長毘婆舍那直到接觸並保持隨順智,不作道果目標的努力(vipassanaṃ vaḍḍhetvā yāva anulomañāṇaṃ āhacca tiṭṭhanti, maggaphalatthaṃ vāyāmaṃ na karonti)」,與《大般若波羅蜜多經》說的「今是學時,非為證時」意趣相同,都表示了菩薩不證初果。而陶師難提波羅(額低葛勒)則證不還果(在家最高果位),為SA.595、SN.2.24等所說往生無煩天七比丘之一。
  「到上限」(yāvatādohipi),智髻比丘長老英譯為「你做到這樣」(You go as far as this)。按:《破斥猶豫》說,這裡,do, hi, pi均為不變詞(dokārahikārapikārā nipātā),意思是「到了最上限」(yāvatuparimanti),這是說,除了以語言懇求、抓腰帶,還(直到)抓頭髮,對去那裡的目的,應該作出努力。菩提比丘長老解說,[當時]低出生者碰高出生者的頭是嚴重違反禮節的。
