我聞如是:
一時,
佛遊舍衛國,在勝林給孤獨園。
爾時,
世尊告諸
比丘:
「若比丘無
慚、無
愧,便
害愛恭敬;若無愛恭敬,便害其信;若無其信,便害
正思惟;若無正思惟,便害正念、正智;若無正念、正智,便害護諸根、護戒、不悔、歡悅、喜、止、樂、
定、見如實、知如真、
厭、無欲、解脫;若無解脫,便害涅槃。若比丘有慚有愧,便習愛恭敬;若有愛恭敬,便習其信;若有其信,便習正思惟;若有正思惟,便習正念、正智;若有正念、正智,便習護諸根、護戒、不悔、歡悅、喜、止、樂、定、見如實、知如真、厭、無欲、解脫;若有解脫,便習涅槃。」
佛說如是,彼諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

愧時,對慚、愧壞失者,根的
自制是
近因被破壞的;在沒有根的自制時,對根的自制壞失者,戒是近因被破壞的;在沒有戒時,對戒壞失者,正定是近因被破壞的;在沒有正定時,對正定壞失者,如實
智見是近因被破壞的;在沒有如實智見時,對如實智見壞失者,
厭、
離貪是近因被破壞的;在沒有厭與離貪時,對厭與離貪壞失者,
解脫智見是近因被破壞的。比丘們!猶如枝葉壞失的樹木,它的
外皮既不來到完整,內皮也……膚材也……心材也不來到完整。同樣的,比丘們!在沒有慚、愧時,對慚、愧壞失者,根的自制是近因被破壞的;在沒有根的自制時,對根的自制壞失者,戒是近因被破壞的;在沒有戒時,對戒壞失者,正定是近因被破壞的;在沒有正定時,對正定壞失者,如實智見是近因被破壞的;在沒有如實智見時,對如實智見壞失者,厭、離貪是近因被破壞的;在沒有厭與離貪時,對厭與離貪壞失者,解脫智見失去近因。
比丘們!在有慚、愧時,對慚、愧具足者,根的自制是近因具足的;在有根的自制時,對根的自制具足者,戒是近因具足的;在有戒時,對戒具足者,正定是近因具足的;在有正定時,對正定具足者,如實智見是近因具足的;在有如實智見時,對如實智見具足者,厭、離貪是近因具足的;在有厭與離貪時,對厭與離貪具足者,解脫智見是近因具足的。比丘們!猶如枝葉具足的樹木,它的外皮既來到完整,內皮也……膚材也……心材也來到完整。同樣的,比丘們!在有慚、愧時,對慚、愧具足者,根的自制具足近因……(中略)解脫智見是近因具足的。」[≃AN.5.24]
