  那時,若奴索尼婆羅門去見世尊。抵達後,與世尊一起互相問候。交換應該被互相問候的友好交談後,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐下的若奴索尼婆羅門對世尊說這個:
  「喬達摩尊師!我是這麼說者、這麼見者:『凡存在死法者,沒有對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄的。』」
  「婆羅門!有存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄的,婆羅門!但[也]有存在死法者對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄的。
  婆羅門!哪位存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄呢?婆羅門!這裡,某人是對欲未離貪、未離意欲、未離情愛、未離渴望、未離熱惱、未離渴愛者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他這麼想:『所愛的欲將捨棄我了,我將捨棄所愛的欲了。』他悲傷、疲累、悲泣、搥胸地號哭,來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄。
  再者,婆羅門!這裡,某人是在身體上是未離貪者、未離意欲、未離情愛、未離渴望、未離熱惱、未離渴愛者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他這麼想:『所愛的身體將捨棄我了,我將捨棄所愛的身體了。』他悲傷、疲累、悲泣、搥胸地號哭,來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄。
  再者,婆羅門!這裡,某人是不作好的、不作善的、不作恐怖的救護、作惡的、作兇暴的、作罪垢者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他這麼想:『我不作好的、不作善的、不作恐怖的救護、作惡的、作兇暴的、作罪垢的,先生!所有不作好的、不作善的、不作恐怖的救護、作惡的、作兇暴的、作罪垢的趣處之所及,死後我將去那趣處。』他悲傷、疲累、悲泣、搥胸地號哭,來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄。
  再者,婆羅門!這裡,某人在正法上是疑惑者、懷疑者、未達依止者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他這麼想:『我在正法上是疑惑者、懷疑者、未達依止者。』他悲傷、疲累、悲泣、搥胸地號哭,來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄。
  婆羅門!這四位存在死法者對死亡害怕、來到戰慄。
  婆羅門!哪位存在死法者對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄呢?婆羅門!這裡,某人是對欲已離貪、已離意欲、已離情愛、已離渴望、已離熱惱、已離渴愛者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他不這麼想:『所愛的欲將捨棄我了,我將捨棄所愛的欲了。』他不悲傷、不疲累、不悲泣、不搥胸地號哭,不來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄。

  再者,婆羅門!某人是不作惡的、不作兇暴的、不作罪垢、作好的、作善的、作恐怖的救護者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他這麼想:『我不作惡的、不作兇暴的、不作罪垢、作好的、作善的、作恐怖的救護的,先生!所有不作惡的、不作兇暴的、不作罪垢、作好的、作善的、作恐怖的救護的趣處之所及,死後我將去那趣處。』他不悲傷、不疲累、不悲泣、不搥胸地號哭,不來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄。
  再者,婆羅門!這裡,某人在正法上是不困惑、不疑惑、已達依止者,他觸達某種嚴重的生病苦惱,當被某種嚴重的生病苦惱觸達時,他這麼想:『我在正法上是不困惑、不疑惑、已達依止者。』他不悲傷、不疲累、不悲泣、不搥胸地號哭,不來到迷亂,婆羅門!這位存在死法者對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄。
  婆羅門!這四位存在死法者對死亡不害怕、不來到戰慄。」
  「太偉大了,喬達摩尊師!太偉大了,喬達摩尊師!……(中略)請喬達摩尊師記得我為優婆塞,從今天起已起終生歸依。」
AN.4.184/ 4. Abhayasuttaṃ
   184. Atha kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca–
   “Ahañhi, bho gotama, evaṃvādī evaṃdiṭṭhi– ‘natthi yo maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassā’”ti. “Atthi, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa; atthi pana, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa.
   “Katamo ca, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa? Idha, brāhmaṇa, ekacco kāmesu avītarāgo hoti avigatacchando avigatapemo avigatapipāso avigatapariḷāho avigatataṇho. Tamenaṃ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati. Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṃ hoti– ‘piyā vata maṃ kāmā jahissanti, piye cāhaṃ kāme jahissāmī’ti. So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṃ kandati, sammohaṃ āpajjati. Ayaṃ kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa.
   “Puna caparaṃ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco kāye avītarāgo hoti avigatacchando avigatapemo avigatapipāso avigatapariḷāho avigatataṇho. Tamenaṃ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati. Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṃ hoti– ‘piyo vata maṃ kāyo jahissati, piyañcāhaṃ kāyaṃ jahissāmī’ti. So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṃ kandati, sammohaṃ āpajjati. Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṃ hoti– ‘akataṃ vata me kalyāṇaṃ, akataṃ kusalaṃ, akataṃ bhīruttāṇaṃ; kataṃ pāpaṃ, kataṃ luddaṃ, kataṃ kibbisaṃ. Yāvatā, bho, akatakalyāṇānaṃ akatakusalānaṃ akatabhīruttāṇānaṃ katapāpānaṃ kataluddānaṃ katakibbisānaṃ gati taṃ gatiṃ pecca gacchāmī’ti. So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṃ kandati, sammohaṃ āpajjati. Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa.

Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṃ hoti– ‘kaṅkhī vatamhi vicikicchī aniṭṭhaṅgato saddhamme’ti. So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṃ kandati, sammohaṃ āpajjati. Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa. Ime kho, brāhmaṇa, cattāro maraṇadhammā samānā bhāyanti, santāsaṃ āpajjanti maraṇassa.

Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṃ hoti– ‘akaṅkhī vatamhi avicikicchī niṭṭhaṅgato saddhamme’ti. So na socati na kilamati na paridevati, na urattāḷiṃ kandati, na sammohaṃ āpajjati. Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṃ āpajjati maraṇassa. Ime kho, brāhmaṇa, cattāro maraṇadhammā samānā na bhāyanti, na santāsaṃ āpajjanti maraṇassā”ti.
   “Abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti. Catutthaṃ.
