  「比丘們!有這四種行道,哪四種呢?遲緩通達的苦行道、快速通達的苦行道、遲緩通達的樂行道、快速通達的樂行道。
  比丘們!而什麼是遲緩通達的苦行道呢?比丘們!這裡,比丘住於在身上隨觀著不淨、在食物上厭逆想、在世間一切上不樂想、在一切諸行上隨觀著無常,又,死想於自身內已被善建立,他依止這五學力而住:信力、力、力、活力之力、慧力,他的這軟弱的五根出現:信根、活力根、念根、定根、慧根,[由於]這些五根的軟弱狀態,他遲緩地到達諸直接的滅盡,比丘們!這被稱為遲緩通達的苦行道。
  比丘們!而什麼是快速通達的苦行道呢?比丘們!這裡,比丘住於在身上隨觀著不淨、在食物上厭逆想、在世間一切上不樂想、在一切諸行上隨觀著無常,又,死想於自身內已被善建立,他依止這五學力而住:信力……(中略)慧力,他的這傑出的五根出現:信根、活力根、念根、定根、慧根,[由於]這些五根的傑出狀態,他快速地到達諸漏直接的滅盡,比丘們!這被稱為快速通達的苦行道。
  比丘們!而什麼是遲緩通達的樂行道呢?比丘們!這裡,比丘就從離諸欲後,從離諸不善法後,進入後住於有尋、有伺離而生喜、樂的初禪,從尋與伺的平息,自身內的明淨心的專一性,進入後住於無尋、無伺,定而生喜、樂的第二禪,從喜的褪去、住於平靜、有念正知、以身體感受樂,進入後住於凡聖者們告知『他是平靜者、具念者、安樂住者』的第三禪,從樂的捨斷與從苦的捨斷,就在之前諸喜悅、憂的滅沒,進入後住於不苦不樂,由平靜而遍淨之念的第四禪,他依止這五學力而住:信力……(中略)慧力,他的這軟弱的五根出現:信根……(中略)慧根,[由於]這些五根的軟弱狀態,他遲緩地到達諸漏直接的滅盡,比丘們!這被稱為遲緩通達的樂行道。
  比丘們!而什麼是快速通達的樂行道呢?比丘們!這裡,比丘就從離諸欲後,從離諸不善法後,進入後住於有尋、有伺,離而生喜、樂的初禪……(中略)第二禪……(中略)的第三禪……(中略)進入後住於不苦不樂,由平靜而遍淨之念的第四禪,他依止這五學力而住:信力、慚力、愧力、活力之力、慧力,他的這傑出的五根出現:信根、活力根、念根、定根、慧根,[由於]這些五根的傑出狀態,他快速地到達諸漏直接的滅盡,比丘們!這被稱為快速通達的樂行道。
  比丘們!這是四種行道。」

   163. “Catasso imā, bhikkhave, paṭipadā. Katamā catasso? Dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā, dukkhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā, sukhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā, sukhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā.
   “Katamā ca, bhikkhave, dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asubhānupassī kāye viharati, āhāre paṭikūlasaññī, sabbaloke anabhiratisaññī, sabbasaṅkhāresu aniccānupassī; maraṇasaññā kho panassa ajjhattaṃ sūpaṭṭhitā hoti. So imāni pañca sekhabalāni upanissāya viharati– saddhābalaṃ, hiribalaṃ, ottappabalaṃ, vīriyabalaṃ paññābalaṃ. Tassimāni pañcindriyāni mudūni pātubhavanti– saddhindriyaṃ, vīriyindriyaṃ, satindriyaṃ, samādhindriyaṃ, paññindriyaṃ. So imesaṃ pañcannaṃ indriyānaṃ muduttā dandhaṃ ānantariyaṃ pāpuṇāti āsavānaṃ khayāya. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā.

Idha bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati; vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati; pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti– ‘upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī’ti tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati; sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṃ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imāni pañca sekhabalāni upanissāya viharati– saddhābalaṃ …pe… paññābalaṃ. Tassimāni pañcindriyāni mudūni pātubhavanti– saddhindriyaṃ …pe… paññindriyaṃ.
