   那時,遊行者玻德哩亞去見世尊。抵達後,與世尊一起互相問候。交換應該被互相問候的友好交談後,在一旁坐下。世尊對在一旁坐下的遊行者玻德哩亞說這個:
  「玻德哩亞!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,哪四種呢?玻德哩亞!這裡,某人是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,但不是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者;玻德哩亞!這裡,某人是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,但不是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者;玻德哩亞!這裡,某人既非對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也非對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者;玻德哩亞!這裡,某人是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,玻德哩亞!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,玻德哩亞!這四種人中哪位你認為比較優勝、比較勝妙呢?」
  「喬達摩尊師!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,哪四種呢?喬達摩尊師!這裡,某人是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,但不是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者;喬達摩尊師!這裡,某人是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,但不是對適合不稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者;喬達摩尊師!這裡,某人既非對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也非對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者;喬達摩尊師!這裡,某人是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,喬達摩尊師!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,喬達摩尊師!這四種人中,凡這位既非對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也非對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,這四種人中這位我認為比較優勝、比較勝妙,那是什麼原因呢?喬達摩尊師!因為這是優勝的,即:平靜。」
  「玻德哩亞!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,哪四種呢?……(中略)玻德哩亞!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,玻德哩亞!這四種人中,凡這位是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,這四種人中這位比較優勝、比較勝妙,那是什麼原因呢?玻德哩亞!因為這是優勝的,即:依時間、場所而知適時。」
  「喬達摩尊師!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,哪四種呢?……(中略)喬達摩尊師!現在的世間中存在著這四種人,喬達摩尊師!這四種人中,凡這位是對不適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說不稱讚話者,也是對適合稱讚者真實地、如實地、適時地說稱讚話者,這四種人中這位我認為比較優勝、比較勝妙,那是什麼原因呢?喬達摩尊師!因為這是優勝的,即:依時間、場所而知適時。
  太偉大了,喬達摩尊師!太偉大了,喬達摩尊師!喬達摩尊師!猶如扶正顛倒的,或揭開隱藏的,或告知迷路者的道路,或在黑暗中持燈火:『有眼者們看見諸色。』同樣的,法被喬達摩尊師以種種法門說明。這個我歸依喬達摩尊師、法、比丘僧團,請喬達摩尊師記得我為優婆塞,從今天起已起終生歸依。」
  阿修羅品第五,其攝頌
  「阿修羅、三則定,以火葬場的燃燒木柴為第五,
   貪、注意、自己的利益,學與玻德哩亞。」

   100. Atha kho potaliyo paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho potaliyaṃ paribbājakaṃ bhagavā etadavoca–
   “Cattārome, potaliya, puggalā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. Katame cattāro? Idha, potaliya, ekacco puggalo avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena, no ca kho vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena. Idha pana, potaliya, ekacco puggalo vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena, no ca kho avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena. Idha pana, potaliya, ekacco puggalo neva avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena, no ca vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena.    “Abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama! Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya– cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantīti, evamevaṃ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito Esāhaṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti. Dasamaṃ.
