  起源於舍衛城。
  那時,傷歌邏婆羅門去見世尊。抵達後,與世尊互相歡迎。歡迎與寒暄後,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐好後,傷歌邏婆羅門對世尊這麼說:
   「喬達摩先生!什麼因、什麼緣,因此有時長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的呢?喬達摩先生!什麼因、什麼緣,因此有時長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的呢?」
  「婆羅門!每當住於心被欲貪纏縛、被欲貪征服,對已生起欲貪的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;那時,不如實知見他人的利益;那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢被胭脂或薑黃或蓼藍或紫檀[等染料]混入,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他不能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心被欲貪纏縛、被欲貪征服,對已生起欲貪的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心被惡意纏縛、被惡意征服,對已生起惡意的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢被火加熱沸騰起泡,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他不能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心被惡意纏縛、被惡意征服,對已生起惡意的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心被惛沈睡眠纏縛、被惛沈睡眠征服,對已生起惛沈睡眠的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢被苔草覆蓋,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他不能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心被惛沈睡眠纏縛、被惛沈睡眠征服,對已生起惛沈睡眠的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心被掉舉後悔纏縛、被掉舉後悔征服,對已生起掉舉後悔的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢被風吹動、搖動、搖擺、起波,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他不能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心被掉舉後悔纏縛、被掉舉後悔征服,對已生起掉舉後悔的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心被疑惑纏縛、被疑惑征服,對已生起疑惑的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢是混濁的、搖動的、泥濘的、被放置在黑暗中,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他不能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心被疑惑纏縛、被疑惑征服,對已生起疑惑的出離不如實了知時,那時,不如實知見自己的利益;那時,不如實知見他人的利益;那時,不如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!這是因、這是緣,依此而有時長時間誦讀的經文不浮現於心中,更不用說沒誦讀的。
  婆羅門!每當住於心不被欲貪纏縛、不被欲貪征服,對已生起欲貪的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;那時,如實知見他人的利益;那時,如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢不被胭脂或薑黃或蓼藍或紫檀[等染料]混入,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心不被欲貪纏縛、不被欲貪征服,對已生起欲貪的出離如實了知時,……(中略)。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心不被惡意纏縛、不被惡意征服,對已生起惡意的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)他人的利益;……兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
    婆羅門!猶如水鉢沒被火加熱、沒沸騰、沒起泡,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心不被惡意纏縛、不被惡意征服,對已生起惡意的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)他人的利益;……兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心不被惛沈睡眠纏縛、不被惛沈睡眠征服,對已生起惛沈睡眠的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)他人的利益;……兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢沒被苔草覆蓋,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心不被惛沈睡眠纏縛、不被惛沈睡眠征服,對已生起惛沈睡眠的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)他人的利益;……兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心不被掉舉後悔纏縛、不被掉舉後悔征服,對已生起掉舉後悔的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)他人的利益;……兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢沒被風吹動、不搖動、不搖擺、不起波,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心不被掉舉後悔纏縛、不被掉舉後悔征服,對已生起掉舉後悔的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;……(中略)他人的利益;……兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  再者,婆羅門!每當住於心不被疑惑纏縛、不被疑惑征服,對已生起疑惑的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;那時,如實知見他人的利益;那時,如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  婆羅門!猶如水鉢是清澈的、清淨的、不濁的、被放置在光明中,在那裡,當有眼的男子觀察自己的面貌時,他能如實知見。同樣的,婆羅門!每當住於心不被疑惑纏縛、不被疑惑征服,對已生起疑惑的出離如實了知時,那時,如實知見自己的利益;那時,如實知見他人的利益;那時,如實知見兩者的利益,則長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  婆羅門!這是因、這是緣,依此而有時長時間沒誦讀的經文浮現於心中,更不用說誦讀的。
  婆羅門!有這心的不染污,當已修習、已多修習時,導向明與解脫果的作證之非障非蓋七覺支,哪七個呢?婆羅門!念覺支是心的不染污,當已修習、已多修習時,導向明與解脫果的作證之非障非蓋;……(中略)婆羅門!平靜覺支是心的不染污,當已修習、已多修習時,導向明與解脫果的作證之非障非蓋。婆羅門!這些是心的不染污,當已修習、已多修習時,導向明與解脫果的作證之非障非蓋七覺支。」
  當這麼說時,傷歌邏婆羅門對世尊這麼說:
  「太偉大了,喬達摩先生!……(中略)請喬達摩尊師記得我為優婆塞,從今天起終生歸依。」
SN.46.55/(5) Saṅgāravasuttaṃ
   236. Sāvatthinidānaṃ Atha kho saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca–
   “Ko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo yenekadā dīgharattaṃ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaṭibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā? Ko pana, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo yenekadā dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā”ti?
   “Yasmiṃ kho, brāhmaṇa, samaye kāmarāgapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati kāmarāgaparetena, uppannassa ca kāmarāgassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ nappajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati, paratthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati, ubhayatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati; dīgharattaṃ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaṭibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā.
   “Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, udapatto saṃsaṭṭho lākhāya vā haliddiyā vā nīliyā vā mañjiṭṭhāya vā. Tattha cakkhumā puriso sakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ paccavekkhamāno yathābhūtaṃ na jāneyya na passeyya. Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye kāmarāgapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati kāmarāgaparetena, uppannassa ca kāmarāgassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ nappajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati, paratthampi …pe… ubhayatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati; dīgharattaṃ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaṭibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā.

Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye vicikicchāpariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati vicikicchāparetena, uppannāya ca vicikicchāya nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ nappajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati, paratthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati, ubhayatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ na jānāti na passati; dīgharattaṃ sajjhāyakatāpi mantā nappaṭibhanti, pageva asajjhāyakatā.    “Yasmiñca kho, brāhmaṇa, samaye na kāmarāgapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na kāmarāgaparetena, uppannassa ca kāmarāgassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, ubhayatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati; dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.

   “Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, udapatto na agginā santatto na pakkuthito na usmudakajāto, tattha cakkhumā puriso sakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ paccavekkhamāno yathābhūtaṃ jāneyya passeyya Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye na byāpādapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na byāpādaparetena, uppannassa ca byāpādassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi …pe… ubhayatthampi… dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.

   “Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, udapatto na sevālapaṇakapariyonaddho. Tattha cakkhumā puriso sakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ paccavekkhamāno yathābhūtaṃ jāneyya passeyya. Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye na thinamiddhapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na thinamiddhaparetena, uppannassa ca thinamiddhassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi …pe… ubhayatthampi… dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.
   “Puna caparaṃ, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye na uddhaccakukkucca-pariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na uddhaccakukkuccaparetena, uppannassa ca uddhaccakukkuccassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi …pe… ubhayatthampi… dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.
   “Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, udapatto na vāterito na calito na bhanto na ūmijāto. Tattha cakkhumā puriso sakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ paccavekkhamāno yathābhūtaṃ jāneyya passeyya. Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye na uddhaccakukkuccapariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na uddhaccakukkuccaparetena, uppannassa ca uddhaccakukkuccassa nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi …pe… ubhayatthampi… dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.
   “Puna caparaṃ, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye na vicikicchāpariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na vicikicchāparetena, uppannāya ca vicikicchāya nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati; ubhayatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati; dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.
   “Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa, udapatto accho vippasanno anāvilo āloke nikkhitto. Tattha cakkhumā puriso sakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ paccavekkhamāno yathābhūtaṃ jāneyya passeyya. Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yasmiṃ samaye na vicikicchāpariyuṭṭhitena cetasā viharati na vicikicchāparetena, uppannāya ca vicikicchāya nissaraṇaṃ yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, attatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, paratthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati, ubhayatthampi tasmiṃ samaye yathābhūtaṃ jānāti passati; dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā. Ayaṃ kho, brāhmaṇa, hetu ayaṃ paccayo yenekadā dīgharattaṃ asajjhāyakatāpi mantā paṭibhanti, pageva sajjhāyakatā.
   “Sattime brāhmaṇa, bojjhaṅgā anāvaraṇā anīvaraṇā cetaso anupakkilesā bhāvitā bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiphalasacchikiriyāya saṃvattanti. Katame satta? Satisambojjhaṅgo kho, brāhmaṇa, anāvaraṇo anīvaraṇo cetaso anupakkileso bhāvito bahulīkato vijjāvimuttiphalasacchikiriyāya saṃvattati …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo kho, brāhmaṇa, anāvaraṇo anīvaraṇo cetaso anupakkileso bhāvito bahulīkato vijjāvimuttiphalasacchikiriyāya saṃvattati. Ime kho, brāhmaṇa, satta bojjhaṅgā anāvaraṇā anīvaraṇā cetaso anupakkilesā bhāvitā bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiphalasacchikiriyāya saṃvattantī”ti. Evaṃ vutte saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti. Pañcamaṃ.
