  那時,眾多比丘在午前時穿好衣服後,取衣鉢,為了托鉢進入舍衛城。(同法門經[SN.46.52])
  「比丘們!當其他外道遊行者們這麼說時,應該能這麼回答:『道友們!每當心是下劣的時,那時,哪些覺支的修習是不適時的,哪些覺支的修習是適時的?
  又,道友們!每當心是掉舉的時,那時,哪些覺支的修習是不適時的,哪些覺支的修習是適時的?』
  比丘們!當被這麼問時,其他外道遊行者必不能解答,且更會遭到惱害,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!正如那不在[感官的]境域中。比丘們!我不見在這包括天、魔、梵的世間;包括沙門婆羅門、天、人的世代中,除了如來或如來的弟子或從他們聽聞以外,對這些問題能以解答使心滿意者。
  比丘們!每當心是下劣的時,那時,寧靜覺支的修習是不適時的;定覺支的修習是不適時的;平靜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是下劣的,以這些法那是難喚起的。比丘們!猶如男子欲使小火燒旺,如果他在那裡投入濕草、投入濕牛糞、投入濕木柴,並且噴水、撒土,那男子可能使小火燒旺嗎?」
  「不,大德!」
  「同樣的,比丘們!每當心是下劣的時,那時,寧靜覺支的修習是不適時的;定覺支的修習是不適時的;平靜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是下劣的,以這些法那是難喚起的。
  比丘們!每當心是下劣的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是適時的;活力覺支的修習是適時的;喜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是下劣的,以這些法那是易喚起的。比丘們!猶如男子欲使小火燒旺,如果他在那裡投入乾草、投入乾牛糞、投入乾木柴,並且吹風、不撒土,那男子可能使小火燒旺嗎?」
  「是的,大德!」
  「同樣的,比丘們!每當心是下劣的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是適時的;活力覺支的修習是適時的;喜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是下劣的,以這些法那是易喚起的。
  比丘們!每當心是掉舉的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是不適時的;活力覺支的修習是不適時的;喜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是掉舉的,以這些法那是難平息的。比丘們!猶如男子欲使大火團熄滅,如果他在那裡投入乾草、投入乾牛糞、投入乾木柴,並且吹風、不撒土,那男子可能使大火團熄滅嗎?」
  「不,大德!」
  「同樣的,比丘們!每當心是掉舉的時,那時,擇法覺支的修習是不適時的;活力覺支的修習是不適時的;喜覺支的修習是不適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是掉舉的,以這些法那是難平息的。
  比丘們!每當心是掉舉的時,那時,寧靜覺支的修習是適時的;定覺支的修習是適時的;平靜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是掉舉的,以這些法那是易平息的。比丘們!猶如男子欲使大火團熄滅,如果他在那裡投入濕草、濕牛糞、濕木柴,並且噴水、撒土,那男子可能使大火團熄滅嗎?」
  「是的,大德!」
  「同樣的,比丘們!每當心是掉舉的時,那時,寧靜覺支的修習是適時的;定覺支的修習是適時的;平靜覺支的修習是適時的,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!心是掉舉的,以這些法那是易平息的。
  而,比丘們!我說:『念是全都適當的。』」
SN.46.53/(3) Aggisuttaṃ
   234. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiyaṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu (pariyāyasuttasadisaṃ).
   “Evaṃvādino, bhikkhave, aññatitthiyā paribbājakā evamassu vacanīyā– ‘yasmiṃ, āvuso, samaye līnaṃ cittaṃ hoti, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ akālo bhāvanāya, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ kālo bhāvanāya? Yasmiṃ panāvuso, samaye uddhataṃ cittaṃ hoti, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ akālo bhāvanāya, katamesaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bojjhaṅgānaṃ kālo bhāvanāyā’ti? Evaṃ puṭṭhā bhikkhave, aññatitthiyā paribbājakā na ceva sampāyissanti, uttariñca vighātaṃ āpajjissanti. Taṃ kissa hetu? Yathā taṃ, bhikkhave, avisayasmiṃ.
   “Nāhaṃ taṃ, bhikkhave, passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya yo imesaṃ pañhānaṃ veyyākaraṇena cittaṃ ārādheyya, aññatra tathāgatena vā tathāgatasāvakena vā ito vā pana sutvā.
   “Yasmiṃ, bhikkhave, samaye līnaṃ cittaṃ hoti, akālo tasmiṃ samaye passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo samādhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya. Taṃ kissa hetu? Līnaṃ, bhikkhave, cittaṃ taṃ etehi dhammehi dussamuṭṭhāpayaṃ hoti.
   “Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso parittaṃ aggiṃ ujjāletukāmo assa. So tattha allāni ceva tiṇāni pakkhipeyya, allāni ca gomayāni pakkhipeyya, allāni ca kaṭṭhāni pakkhipeyya udakavātañca dadeyya, paṃsukena ca okireyya; bhabbo nu kho so puriso parittaṃ aggiṃ ujjālitun”ti? “No hetaṃ, bhante”.
   “Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ samaye līnaṃ cittaṃ hoti, akālo tasmiṃ samaye passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo samādhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya, akālo upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya. Taṃ kissa hetu? Līnaṃ, bhikkhave, cittaṃ taṃ etehi dhammehi dussamuṭṭhāpayaṃ hoti.
