  我聽到這樣
  有一次世尊住在舍衛城祇樹林給孤獨園。
  當時,尊者舍利弗與尊者大目揵連住在王舍城栗鼠飼養處的竹林中同一住處。
  那時,尊者舍利弗在傍晚時,從獨坐中出來,去見尊者大目揵連。抵達後,互相歡迎。歡迎與寒暄後,在一旁坐下。在一旁坐好後,尊者舍利弗對尊者大目揵連這麼說:
  「大目揵連學友!你諸根明淨,臉色清淨、皎潔,今日尊者大目揵連以寂靜之住處住嗎?」
  「學友!我今日以粗的住處住,並且我又有法的談論。」
  「學友!尊者大目揵連與誰互相有法的談論呢?」
  「學友!我與世尊互相有法的談論。」
  「學友!現在世尊遠住在舍衛城祇樹林給孤獨園,尊者大目揵連以神通去見世尊,或者世尊以神通來見尊者大目揵連呢?」
  「學友!非我以神通去見世尊,也非世尊以神通來見我,而只是世尊淨化天眼與天耳界對我,我淨化天眼與天耳界對世尊。」
  「那麼,尊者大目揵連與世尊互相有怎樣之法的談論呢?」
  「學友!這裡,我對世尊這麼說:『大德!這裡,被稱為「活力已被發動者,活力已被發動者」,大德!什麼情形是活力已被發動者?』
  學友!當這麼說時,世尊對我這麼說:『目揵連!這裡,活力已被發動的比丘住於:「寧願只剩下皮膚、肌腱、骨骸;要身體的血肉枯乾,只要以人的毅力、人的活力、人的努力應該達成而未達成者,將沒有活力的止息。」目揵連!這樣是活力已被發動者。』學友!我與世尊互相有這樣法的談論。」
  「學友!我們與尊者大目揵連相比,猶如微小的小石粒比喜馬拉雅山山王。因為尊者大目揵連是大神通力、大威力者,當他願意時,能住世一劫。」
  「學友!我們與尊者舍利弗相比,猶如微小的鹽粒比一大甕的鹽。因為尊者舍利弗被世尊以種種法門稱頌、稱讚、讚美:
  『以慧、戒、寂靜比舍利弗,
   凡到彼岸的比丘,最高也只能如此。』」
  像這樣,那兩大龍互相善說、善講述、感到喜悅。
SN.21.3. Ghaṭasuttaṃ
   237. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno rājagahe viharanti veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe ekavihāre. Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā mahāmoggallānena saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ etadavoca–
   “Vippasannāni kho te, āvuso moggallāna, indriyāni; parisuddho mukhavaṇṇo pariyodāto santena nūnāyasmā mahāmoggallāno ajja vihārena vihāsī”ti. “Oḷārikena khvāhaṃ, āvuso, ajja vihārena vihāsiṃ. Api ca, me ahosi dhammī kathā”ti. “Kena saddhiṃ panāyasmato mahāmoggallānassa ahosi dhammī kathā”ti? “Bhagavatā kho me, āvuso, saddhiṃ ahosi dhammī kathā”ti. “Dūre kho, āvuso, bhagavā etarahi sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Kiṃ nu kho, āyasmā, mahāmoggallāno bhagavantaṃ iddhiyā upasaṅkami; udāhu bhagavā āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ iddhiyā upasaṅkamī”ti? “Na khvāhaṃ, āvuso, bhagavantaṃ iddhiyā upasaṅkamiṃ; napi maṃ bhagavā iddhiyā upasaṅkami. Api ca, me yāvatā bhagavā ettāvatā dibbacakkhu visujjhi dibbā ca sotadhātu. Bhagavatopi yāvatāhaṃ ettāvatā dibbacakkhu visujjhi dibbā ca sotadhātū”ti. “Yathākathaṃ panāyasmato mahāmoggallānassa bhagavatā saddhiṃ ahosi dhammī kathā”ti?
   “Idhāhaṃ, āvuso, bhagavantaṃ etadavocaṃ– ‘āraddhavīriyo āraddhavīriyoti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, āraddhavīriyo hotī’ti? Evaṃ vutte, maṃ, āvuso, bhagavā etadavoca– ‘idha, moggallāna, bhikkhu āraddhavīriyo viharati– kāmaṃ taco ca nhāru ca aṭṭhī ca avasissatu, sarīre upasussatu maṃsalohitaṃ, yaṃ taṃ purisathāmena purisavīriyena purisaparakkamena pattabbaṃ na taṃ apāpuṇitvā vīriyassa saṇṭhānaṃ bhavissatīti. Evaṃ kho, moggallāna, āraddhavīriyo hotī’ti. Evaṃ kho me, āvuso, bhagavatā saddhiṃ ahosi dhammī kathā”ti.
   “Seyyathāpi, āvuso, himavato pabbatarājassa parittā pāsāṇasakkharā yāvadeva upanikkhepanamattāya evameva kho mayaṃ āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa yāvadeva upanikkhepanamattāya. Āyasmā hi mahāmoggallāno mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo ākaṅkhamāno kappaṃ tiṭṭheyyā”ti.
   “Seyyathāpi āvuso, mahatiyā loṇaghaṭāya parittā loṇasakkharāya yāvadeva upanikkhepanamattāya; evameva kho mayaṃ āyasmato sāriputtassa yāvadeva upanikkhepanamattāya. Āyasmā hi sāriputto bhagavatā anekapariyāyena thomito vaṇṇito pasattho –
   “Sāriputtova paññāya, sīlena upasamena ca;
   Yopi pāraṅgato bhikkhu, etāvaparamo siyā”ti.
   Itiha te ubho mahānāgā aññamaññassa subhāsitaṃ sulapitaṃ samanumodiṃsūti. Tatiyaṃ.

  「大龍」(mahānāgā),菩提比丘長老英譯為「大龍」(great nāgas),並解說「龍」通常指阿羅漢。「龍」(nāga),另譯為「象;龍象」。
