  在王舍城栗鼠飼養處。
  那時,尊者大迦葉去見世尊。抵達後,向世尊問訊,接著在一旁坐下。在一旁坐好後,世尊對尊者大迦葉這麼說:
  「迦葉!請你教誡比丘們,請你為比丘們作法說,迦葉!我,或者你應該教誡比丘們,迦葉!我,或者你應該為比丘們作法說。」
  「大德!現在的比丘是難順從糾正者,具備作難順從糾正法,不能忍耐、不善理解教誡者,不能忍耐、不善理解教誡的。」
  「迦葉!確實如此,從前,上座比丘們是住林野者,並且是對住林野狀態稱讚者;是吃鉢食者,並且是對吃鉢食狀態稱讚者;是穿糞掃衣者,並且是對穿糞掃衣狀態稱讚者;是持三衣者,並且是對持三衣狀態稱讚者;是少欲者,並且是對少欲稱讚者;是知足者,並且是對知足稱讚者;是獨住者,並且是對獨住稱讚者;是離群眾者,並且是對離群眾稱讚者;是活力已被發動者,並且是對活力激發稱讚者。
  在那裡,凡比丘是住林野者,並且是對住林野狀態稱讚者;是吃鉢食者,並且是對吃鉢食狀態稱讚者;是穿糞掃衣者,並且是對穿糞掃衣狀態稱讚者;是持三衣者,並且是對持三衣狀態稱讚者;是少欲者,並且是對少欲稱讚者;是知足者,並且是對知足稱讚者;是獨住者,並且是對獨住稱讚者;是離群眾者,並且是對離群眾稱讚者;是活力已被發動者,並且是對活力激發稱讚者,上座比丘們以座位邀請他:『來!比丘!這位比丘是什麼名字?這位比丘確實是善的,這位比丘確實是對學熱衷者,來!比丘!請坐這個座位。』
  迦葉!在那裡,新學比丘們這麼想:『聽說凡比丘是住林野者,並且是對住林野狀態稱讚者;是吃鉢食者,且……(中略)是穿糞掃衣者,且……是持三衣者,且……是少欲者,且……是知足者,且……是獨住者,且……是離群眾者,且……是活力已被發動者,並且是對活力激發稱讚者,上座比丘們以座位邀請他:「來!比丘!這位比丘是什麼名字?這位比丘確實是善的,這位比丘確實是對學熱衷者,來!比丘!請坐這個座位。」』他們如實地實行,則對他們有長久的利益與安樂。
  但,迦葉!現在,上座比丘們不是住林野者,並且不是對住林野狀態稱讚者;不是吃鉢食者,並且不是對吃鉢食狀態稱讚者;不是穿糞掃衣者,並且不是對穿糞掃衣狀態稱讚者;不是持三衣者,並且不是對持三衣狀態稱讚者;不是少欲者,並且不是對少欲稱讚者;不是知足者,並且不是對知足稱讚者;不是獨住者,並且不是對獨住稱讚者;不是離群眾者,並且不是對離群眾稱讚者;不是活力已被發動者,並且不是對活力激發稱讚者。
  在那裡,凡有名聲的知名比丘是衣服、施食、住處、病人的需要物、醫藥必需品的利得者,上座比丘們以座位邀請他:『來!比丘!這位比丘是什麼名字?這位比丘確實是善的,這位比丘確實是同梵行者的愛欲者,來!比丘!請坐這個座位。』
  迦葉!在那裡,新學比丘們這麼想:『聽說凡有名聲的知名比丘是衣服、施食、住處、病人的需要物、醫藥必需品的利得者,上座比丘們以座位邀請他:「來!比丘!這位比丘是什麼名字?這位比丘確實是善的,這位比丘確實是同梵行者的愛欲者,來!比丘!請坐這個座位。」』他們如實地實行,則有他們長久的不利與苦。
  迦葉!當正確地說時,凡能說:『梵行者被梵行之禍害毀了;梵行者被梵行之欲求所欲求了。』者,迦葉!那是現在,當正確地說時,他能說『梵行者被梵行之禍害毀了;梵行者被梵行之欲求所欲求了。』」
SN.16.8. Tatiya-ovādasuttaṃ
   151. Rājagahe kalandakanivāpe. Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ mahākassapaṃ bhagavā etadavoca– “ovada, kassapa, bhikkhū; karohi, kassapa, bhikkhūnaṃ dhammiṃ kathaṃ. Ahaṃ vā, kassapa, bhikkhūnaṃ ovadeyyaṃ tvaṃ vā; ahaṃ vā bhikkhūnaṃ dhammiṃ kathaṃ kareyyaṃ tvaṃ vā”ti.
   “Dubbacā kho, bhante, etarahi bhikkhū, dovacassakaraṇehi dhammehi samannāgatā, akkhamā, appadakkhiṇaggāhino anusāsanīn”ti. “Tathā hi pana, kassapa, pubbe therā bhikkhū āraññikā ceva ahesuṃ āraññikattassa ca vaṇṇavādino, piṇḍapātikā ceva ahesuṃ piṇḍapātikattassa ca vaṇṇavādino paṃsukūlikā ceva ahesuṃ paṃsukūlikattassa ca vaṇṇavādino, tecīvarikā ceva ahesuṃ tecīvarikattassa ca vaṇṇavādino, appicchā ceva ahesuṃ appicchatāya ca vaṇṇavādino, santuṭṭhā ceva ahesuṃ santuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādino, pavivittā ceva ahesuṃ pavivekassa ca vaṇṇavādino, asaṃsaṭṭhā ceva ahesuṃ asaṃsaggassa ca vaṇṇavādino, āraddhavīriyā ceva ahesuṃ vīriyārambhassa ca vaṇṇavādino.
   “Tatra yo hoti bhikkhu āraññiko ceva āraññikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, piṇḍapātiko ceva piṇḍapātikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, paṃsukūliko ceva paṃsukūlikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, tecīvariko ceva tecīvarikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, appiccho ceva appicchatāya ca vaṇṇavādī, santuṭṭho ceva santuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādī, pavivitto ceva pavivekassa ca vaṇṇavādī, asaṃsaṭṭho ceva asaṃsaggassa ca vaṇṇavādī, āraddhavīriyo ceva vīriyārambhassa ca vaṇṇavādī, taṃ therā bhikkhū āsanena nimantenti– ‘ehi, bhikkhu, ko nāmāyaṃ bhikkhu, bhaddako vatāyaṃ bhikkhu, sikkhākāmo vatāyaṃ bhikkhu; ehi, bhikkhu, idaṃ āsanaṃ nisīdāhī’”ti.
   “Tatra, kassapa, navānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ evaṃ hoti– ‘yo kira so hoti bhikkhu āraññiko ceva āraññikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, piṇḍapātiko ceva …pe… paṃsukūliko ceva… tecīvariko ceva… appiccho ceva… santuṭṭho ceva… pavivitto ceva… asaṃsaṭṭho ceva… āraddhavīriyo ceva vīriyārambhassa ca vaṇṇavādī, taṃ therā bhikkhū āsanena nimantenti– ehi, bhikkhu, ko nāmāyaṃ bhikkhu, bhaddako vatāyaṃ bhikkhu, sikkhākāmo vatāyaṃ bhikkhu; ehi, bhikkhu, idaṃ āsanaṃ nisīdāhī’ti. Te tathattāya paṭipajjanti; tesaṃ taṃ hoti dīgharattaṃ hitāya sukhāya.
   “Etarahi pana, kassapa, therā bhikkhū na ceva āraññikā na ca āraññikattassa vaṇṇavādino, na ceva piṇḍapātikā na ca piṇḍapātikattassa vaṇṇavādino, na ceva paṃsukūlikā na ca paṃsukūlikattassa vaṇṇavādino, na ceva tecīvarikā na ca tecīvarikattassa vaṇṇavādino, na ceva appicchā na ca appicchatāya vaṇṇavādino, na ceva santuṭṭhā na ca santuṭṭhiyā vaṇṇavādino, na ceva pavivittā na ca pavivekassa vaṇṇavādino, na ceva asaṃsaṭṭhā na ca asaṃsaggassa vaṇṇavādino na ceva āraddhavīriyā na ca vīriyārambhassa vaṇṇavādino.
   “Tatra yo hoti bhikkhu ñāto yasassī lābhī cīvara-piṇḍapāta-senāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṃ taṃ therā bhikkhū āsanena nimantenti– ‘ehi, bhikkhu, ko nāmāyaṃ bhikkhu, bhaddako vatāyaṃ bhikkhu, sabrahmacārikāmo vatāyaṃ bhikkhu; ehi, bhikkhu, idaṃ āsanaṃ nisīdāhī’”ti.
   “Tatra, kassapa, navānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ evaṃ hoti– ‘yo kira so hoti bhikkhu ñāto yasassī lābhī cīvara-piṇḍapāta-senāsana-gilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṃ taṃ therā bhikkhū āsanena nimantenti– ehi, bhikkhu, ko nāmāyaṃ bhikkhu, bhaddako vatāyaṃ bhikkhu, sabrahmacārikāmo vatāyaṃ bhikkhu; ehi, bhikkhu, idaṃ āsanaṃ nisīdāhī’ti. Te tathattāya paṭipajjanti. Tesaṃ taṃ hoti dīgharattaṃ ahitāya dukkhāya. Yañhi taṃ, kassapa, sammā vadamāno vadeyya– ‘upaddutā brahmacārī brahmacārūpaddavena abhipatthanā brahmacārī brahmacāri-abhipatthanenā’ti, etarahi taṃ, kassapa, sammā vadamāno vadeyya– ‘upaddutā brahmacārī brahmacārūpaddavena abhipatthanā brahmacārī brahmacāri-abhipatthanenā’”ti.   「修行遠離(SA.1140);常樂空閑寂靜之處(GA)」,南傳作「獨住者」(pavivittā,另譯為「已遠離的;閑居的;獨居的;獨住的」),菩提比丘長老英譯為「隔離,孤獨」(secluded, solitude)。
  「同梵行者的愛欲者」(sabrahmacārikāmo),菩提比丘長老英譯為「熱衷於與他聖潔生活的兄弟結交」(keen on the company of his brothers in the holy life)。按:《顯揚真義》以「[心想:]這幾位跟隨我實行,這樣,欲愛、欲求、熱望」(‘‘ime maṃ parivāretvā carantū’’ti evaṃ kāmeti icchati patthetīti)解說。
  「梵行者被梵行之欲求所欲求了」(abhipatthanā brahmacārī brahmacāri-abhipatthanenāti),菩提比丘長老依羅馬拼音本(abhibhavanā brahmacārī brahmacārabhibhavanenā ti)英譯為「那些導向聖潔生活者被那些征服導向聖潔生活者征服了」(those leading the holy life have been vanquished by the vanquishing of those who lead the holy life)。按:「欲求」(abhipatthanenāti)《顯揚真義》以「四種必需品(食/衣/住/藥)的極度熱望」(adhimattapatthanāsaṅkhātena catupaccayabhāvena)解說。
