  住在王舍城的竹林中。
  那時,三十位波婆城的比丘全是住林野者、全是食施食者、全是穿糞掃衣者、全是持三衣者、全是尚有結縛者,他們去見世尊。抵達後,向世尊問訊,接著在一旁坐下。
  那時,世尊這麼想:
  「這三十位波婆城的比丘全是住林野者、全是食施食者、全是穿糞掃衣者、全是持三衣者、全是尚有結縛者,讓我教導他們,就在這座位上,他們的心以不執取而從諸煩惱解脫那樣的法。」
  那時,世尊召喚比丘們:
  「比丘們!」
  「尊師!」那些比丘回答世尊。
  世尊這麼說:
  「比丘們!輪迴是無始的,無明所蓋、渴愛所繫之眾生的流轉、輪迴,起始點是不被了知的。比丘們!你們怎麼想:你們經這長途流轉、輪迴,頭被切斷流出的血流與四大海中的水,哪個較多?」
  「大德!如我們了知世尊教導的法,大德!這裡,這比較多:我們經這長途流轉、輪迴,頭被切斷流出的血流,而非四大海中的水。」
  「比丘們!好!好!比丘們!你們這麼了知我教導的法,好!比丘們!這裡,這比較多:你們經這長途流轉、輪迴,頭被切斷流出的血流,而非四大海中的水;比丘們!你們長久生為牛,牛的頭被切斷流出的血流[較多],而非四大海中的水;比丘們!你們長久生為水牛,水牛的頭被切斷流出的血流……(中略)比丘們!你們長久生為羊,羊的……(中略)生為山羊,山羊的……(中略)生為鹿,鹿的……(中略)生為雞,雞的……(中略)生為豬,豬的……(中略)比丘們!你們長久為村落搶劫的強盜,被捕後頭被切斷流出的血流;比丘們!你們長久為攔路搶劫的強盜,被捕後頭被切斷流出的血流;比丘們!你們長久為通姦的強盜,被捕後頭被切斷流出的血流[較多],而非四大海中的水,那是什麼原因呢?比丘們!輪迴是無始的,……(中略)足以要解脫!」
  這就是世尊所說,那些悅意的比丘歡喜世尊所說。
  而當這個解說被說時,這三十位波婆城的比丘的心以不執取而從諸煩惱解脫。
SN.15.13/(3). Tiṃsamattasuttaṃ
   136. Rājagahe viharati veḷuvane. Atha kho tiṃsamattā pāveyyakā bhikkhū sabbe āraññikā sabbe piṇḍapātikā sabbe paṃsukūlikā sabbe tecīvarikā sabbe sasaṃyojanā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Atha kho bhagavato etadahosi– “ime kho tiṃsamattā pāveyyakā bhikkhū sabbe āraññikā sabbe piṇḍapātikā sabbe paṃsukūlikā sabbe tecīvarikā sabbe sasaṃyojanā. Yaṃnūnāhaṃ imesaṃ tathā dhammaṃ deseyyaṃ yathā nesaṃ imasmiṃyeva āsane anupādāya āsavehi cittāni vimucceyyun”ti. Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi– “bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca–
   “Anamataggoyaṃ, bhikkhave, saṃsāro. Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṃ sattānaṃ taṇhāsaṃyojanānaṃ sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ. Taṃ kiṃ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṃ nu kho bahutaraṃ, yaṃ vā vo iminā dīghena addhunā sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ, yaṃ vā catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakan”ti? “Yathā kho mayaṃ, bhante, bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāma, etadeva, bhante, bahutaraṃ, yaṃ no iminā dīghena addhunā sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ, na tveva catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakan”ti.
   “Sādhu sādhu, bhikkhave, sādhu kho me tumhe, bhikkhave, evaṃ dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānātha. Etadeva, bhikkhave, bahutaraṃ, yaṃ vo iminā dīghena addhunā sandhāvataṃ saṃsarataṃ sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ, na tveva catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakaṃ. Dīgharattaṃ vo, bhikkhave, gunnaṃ sataṃ gobhūtānaṃ sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ, na tveva catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakaṃ. Dīgharattaṃ vo, bhikkhave, mahiṃsānaṃ sataṃ mahiṃsabhūtānaṃ sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ …pe… dīgharattaṃ vo, bhikkhave, urabbhānaṃ sataṃ urabbhabhūtānaṃ …pe… ajānaṃ sataṃ ajabhūtānaṃ… migānaṃ sataṃ migabhūtānaṃ… kukkuṭānaṃ sataṃ kukkuṭabhūtānaṃ… sūkarānaṃ sataṃ sūkarabhūtānaṃ… dīgharattaṃ vo, bhikkhave, corā gāmaghātāti gahetvā sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ. Dīgharattaṃ vo, bhikkhave, corā pāripanthikāti gahetvā sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ. Dīgharattaṃ vo, bhikkhave, corā pāradārikāti gahetvā sīsacchinnānaṃ lohitaṃ passannaṃ paggharitaṃ, na tveva catūsu mahāsamuddesu udakaṃ. Taṃ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṃ, bhikkhave, saṃsāro …pe… alaṃ vimuccitun”ti.
   “Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti. Imasmiñca pana veyyākaraṇasmiṃ bhaññamāne tiṃsamattānaṃ pāveyyakānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ anupādāya āsavehi cittāni vimucciṃsū”ti. Tatiyaṃ.
