  如是我聞
  一時住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
  爾時,世尊告諸比丘
  「有不律儀、律儀,諦聽!善思!當為汝說。
  云何不律儀?
  眼根不律儀所攝護,眼識著色,緣著故,以生苦受;苦受故,不一其心;不一心故,不得如實知見;不得如實知見故,不離疑惑;不離疑惑故,由他所誤而常苦住;耳、鼻、舌、身、意亦復如是,是名不律儀。
  云何律儀?
  眼根律儀所攝護,眼識{識}色,心不染著;心不染著已,常樂{更}[受]住;心樂住已,常一其心;一其心已,如實知見;如實知見已,離諸疑惑;離諸疑惑已,不由他誤,常安樂住;耳、鼻、舌、身、意亦復如是,是名律儀。」
  佛說此經已,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

  「比丘們!我將為你們教導住放逸者與住不放逸者,你們要聽它!
  比丘們!而怎樣是住放逸者?
  比丘們!對眼根住於不自制者,在能被眼識知的諸色上心墮落;對那位心墮落者,欣悅不存在;在欣悅不存在時,不存在;在喜不存在時,寧靜不存在;在寧靜不存在時,苦存在;對心苦者,不入定;在心不得定時,諸法不變成明顯;以諸法的不明顯,就名為(就走到稱呼)『住放逸者』。……(中略)比丘們!對舌根住於不自制者,在能被舌識知的諸味道上心墮落;對那位心墮落者……(中略)就名為『住放逸者』。……(中略)比丘們!對意根住於不自制者,在能被意識知的諸法上心墮落;對那位心墮落者,欣悅不存在;在欣悅不存在時,喜不存在;在喜不存在時,寧靜不存在;當在寧靜不存在時,苦存在(有苦);對心苦者,不入定;在心不得定時,諸法不變成明顯;以諸法的不明顯,就名為『住放逸者』。比丘們!這樣是住放逸者。

Cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu tassa byāsittacittassa pāmojjaṃ na hoti. Pāmojje asati pīti na hoti. Pītiyā asati passaddhi na hoti. Passaddhiyā asati dukkhaṃ hoti. Dukkhino cittaṃ na samādhiyati.   「法顯現」(dhammā pātubhavanti),菩提比丘長老英譯為「事象成為明白的」(phenomena become manifest)。按:《顯揚真義》以止觀法(samathavipassanādhammā)解說這裡的法,但長老認為是內外處(法)顯出無常、苦、非我,如SN.35.99所說。
