  我聽到這樣
  有一次世尊住在舍衛城祇樹林給孤獨園。
  在那裡,世尊召喚比丘們:「比丘們!」
  「尊師!」那些比丘回答世尊。
  世尊這麼說:
  「比丘們!我將教導你們往生之意志,你們要聽!你們要好好作意!我要說了。」
  「是的,大德!」那些比丘回答世尊。
  世尊這麼說:
  「比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與有大財富的剎帝利為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與有大財富的婆羅門……(中略)與有大財富的屋主為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『四大天王諸天長壽、美貌、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與四大天王諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『三十三天諸天……(中略)焰摩諸天……(中略)兜率諸天……(中略)化樂諸天……(中略)他化自在諸天長壽、美貌、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與他化自在諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『一千梵天長壽、美貌、多樂。』比丘們!一千梵天住於勝解、遍佈一千個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。比丘們!猶如有眼男子拿一粒蓖麻在手掌上後能觀察。同樣的,比丘們!一千梵天住於勝解、遍佈一千個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與一千梵天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『二千梵天……(中略)三千梵天……(中略)四千梵天……(中略)五千梵天長壽、美貌、多樂。』比丘們!五千梵天住於勝解、遍佈五千個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。比丘們!猶如有眼男子拿五粒蓖麻在手上後能觀察。同樣的,比丘們!五千梵天住於勝解、遍佈五千個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與五千梵天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『一萬梵天長壽、美貌、多樂。』比丘們!一萬梵天住於勝解、遍佈一萬個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。比丘們!猶如美麗的、出色的、八個切割面的、作工細緻的、放在黃毛布上的琉璃寶珠,輝耀、照亮、照耀。同樣的,比丘們!一萬梵天住於勝解、遍佈一萬個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與一萬梵天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『十萬梵天長壽、美貌、多樂。』比丘們!十萬梵天住於勝解、遍佈十萬世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。比丘們!猶如熟練作業的鍛工子非常有技術的在鍛冶爐上打造的、放在黃毛布上的閻浮河金幣,輝耀、照亮、照耀。同樣的,比丘們!十萬梵天住於勝解、遍佈十萬個世間界,也住於勝解、遍佈那些往生那裡的眾生。他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與十萬梵天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『光天諸天……(中略)少光天諸天……無量光天諸天……光音天諸天長壽、美貌、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與光音天諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『少淨天諸天……(中略)無量淨天諸天……遍淨天諸天長壽、美貌、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與遍淨天諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『廣果天諸天……(中略)無煩天諸天……無熱天諸天……善見天諸天……善現天諸天……阿迦膩吒天諸天長壽、美貌、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與阿迦膩吒天諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『到達虛空無邊處諸天長壽、久住、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與到達虛空無邊處諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『到達識無邊處諸天長壽、久住、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與到達識無邊處諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼聽聞:『到達無所有處諸天……(中略)到達非想非非想處諸天長壽、久住、多樂。』他這麼想:『啊!願我以身體的崩解,死後往生到與到達非想非非想處諸天為同伴。』他在那上面安置心、站穩心、修習心,這些意志與他的住處這樣已修習、這樣已多修習導向那裡的往生,比丘們!導向那裡的往生,這是道、這是道跡。
  再者,比丘們!這裡,比丘具備信、戒、聽聞、施捨、慧,他這麼想:『啊!願我以諸煩惱的滅盡,當生以證智自作證後,能進入後住於無煩惱的心解脫慧解脫。』他以諸煩惱的滅盡,當生以證智自作證後,能進入後住於無煩惱的心解脫、慧解脫。比丘們!這位比丘不往生於任何地方。」
  這就是世尊所說,那些比丘歡喜世尊所說。

  逐步、純淨、人法,應該實行、多界細說,
  佛陀的名字之稱讚與四十,入出息、身至、往生。
MN.120/(10) Saṅkhārupapattisuttaṃ
   160. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi– “bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca– “saṅkhārupapattiṃ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, taṃ suṇātha, sādhukaṃ manasi karotha; bhāsissāmī”ti. “Evaṃ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca–
   161. “Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena samannāgato hoti, sutena samannāgato hoti, cāgena samannāgato hoti, paññāya samannāgato hoti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā khattiyamahāsālānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṃ bhāvitā evaṃ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṃvattanti. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṃ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṃvattati.
   162. “Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena samannāgato hoti, sutena samannāgato hoti, cāgena samannāgato hoti, paññāya samannāgato hoti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā brāhmaṇamahāsālānaṃ …pe… gahapatimahāsālānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato paṇḍukambale nikkhitto bhāsate ca tapate ca virocati ca; evameva kho, bhikkhave, dasasahasso brahmā dasasahassilokadhātuṃ pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati. Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā dasasahassassa brahmuno sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. Yepi tattha sattā upapannā tepi pharitvā adhimuccitvā viharati. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā satasahassassa brahmuno sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā ābhassarānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā subhakiṇhānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa sutaṃ hoti– vehapphalā devā …pe… avihā devā… atappā devā… sudassā devā… sudassī devā… akaniṭṭhā devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulāti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā akaniṭṭhānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa sutaṃ hoti– ‘ākāsānañcāyatanūpagā devā dīghāyukā ciraṭṭhitikā sukhabahulā’ti Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā ākāsānañcāyatanūpagānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṃ bhāvitā evaṃ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṃvattanti. Tassa sutaṃ hoti– ‘viññāṇañcāyatanūpagā devā dīghāyukā ciraṭṭhitikā sukhabahulā’ti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā viññāṇañcāyatanūpagānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa sutaṃ hoti– ākiñcaññāyatanūpagā devā …pe… nevasaññānāsaññāyatanūpagā devā dīghāyukā ciraṭṭhitikā sukhabahulāti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘aho vatāhaṃ kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā nevasaññānāsaññāyatanūpagānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṃ cittaṃ dahati, taṃ cittaṃ adhiṭṭhāti, taṃ cittaṃ bhāveti. Tassa te saṅkhārā ca vihārā ca evaṃ bhāvitā evaṃ bahulīkatā tatrupapattiyā saṃvattanti. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo ayaṃ paṭipadā tatrupapattiyā saṃvattati.
   175. “Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhāya samannāgato hoti, sīlena… sutena… cāgena… paññāya samannāgato hoti. Tassa evaṃ hoti ‘aho vatāhaṃ āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyan’ti. So āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na katthaci upapajjatī”ti.

  「意行生(MA.168)」,南傳作「往生之意志」(saṅkhārupapattiṃ),菩提比丘長老英譯為「根據一個人的熱望而再現」(reappearance in accordance with one's aspiration)。按:《破斥猶豫》以「只以意志往生(saṅkhārānaṃyeva upapattiṃ),不是眾生、不是人,或以福行到達有之蘊(puññābhisaṅkhārena vā bhavūpagakkhandhānaṃ)」解說,但在後段「意志與住處」(saṅkhārā ca vihārā)處則以「以連同熱望、信等五法」(saha patthanāya saddhādayova pañca dhammā)解說,也就是以「熱望」解說「意志」,長老據此將「意志」譯為「熱望」來帶亮要表達的意思(to bring the intended meaning to light)。
