  「比丘們!有這三種道,哪三種呢?粗道、燒盡道、中道。
  比丘們!哪種是粗道呢?比丘們!這裡,某人是這麼說、這麼見者:『在欲中沒有過失。』他來到陷落於那欲中,比丘們!這被稱為粗道。
  比丘們!哪種是燒盡道呢?比丘們!這裡,某人是裸行者、脫離正行者、舔手者、受邀不來者受邀不住立者、不受用帶來的、特別作的、招待的[食物]者,他不從瓶口取食,不從鍋口取食,不[從]門檻中間、棒杖中間、杵中間、正在吃的兩人、孕婦、授乳女、與男子生活者[取食],不從撿拾收集的食物處、有狗現前處、蒼蠅群集處[取食],不[吃]魚、肉,不飲榖酒、果酒、[發酵]酸粥,他[托鉢]一家[吃]一口、二家二口、……七家七口,他[每天]以一小碟[食物]維生、二小碟維生、……七小碟維生,一天吃一餐、二天吃一餐、……七天吃一餐,像這樣,半個月[吃一餐],他住於致力於定期吃食物之實踐,他是食生菜者、食稗子者、食生米者、食大度拉米者、食蘇苔者、食米糠者、食飯汁者、食胡麻粉者、食茅草者、食牛糞者,他以森林的根與果實食物維生,以落下的果實為食物,他穿麻衣、麻的混織物、裹屍布、糞掃衣、低力刀樹[之樹皮]、羚羊皮、羊皮、茅草衣、樹皮衣、木片衣、頭髮編織衣、獸毛編織衣、貓頭鷹羽毛衣,他是拔髮鬚者、致力於拔髮鬚之實踐者、常站立者、拒絕座位者、蹲踞者、勤奮於蹲踞之實踐者、臥荊棘者,他住於致力於黃昏前水浴三次之實踐者,像這樣,他住於許多如此形式對身體的苦行與折磨之實踐,比丘們!這被稱為燒盡道。
  比丘們!哪種是中道呢?比丘們!這裡,比丘住於在身上隨觀身,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪婪、憂;在受上……(中略)在心上……(中略)住於在法上隨觀法,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪婪、憂,比丘們!這被稱為中道。
  比丘們!這是三種道。」
  「比丘們!有這三種道,哪三種呢?粗道、燒盡道、中道。
  比丘們!哪種是粗道呢?……(中略)比丘們!這被稱為粗道。
  比丘們!哪種是燒盡道呢?……(中略)比丘們!這被稱為燒盡道。
  比丘們!哪種是中道呢?比丘們!這裡,比丘為了未生起的惡不善法之不生起而生欲、努力、生起活力、盡心、勤奮;為了已生起的惡不善法之捨斷而生欲、努力、生起活力、盡心、勤奮;為了未生起的善法之生起而生欲、努力、生起活力、盡心、勤奮;為了已生起的善法之存續、不消失、增加、擴大、修習圓滿而生欲、努力、生起活力、盡心、勤奮,……。
  修習具備欲定勤奮之行的神足,活力定勤……(中略)心定……(中略)修習具備考察定勤奮之行的神足……(中略)。
  修習信根……修習活力根……修習念根……修習定根……修習慧根……。
  修習信力……修習活力之力……修習念力……修習定力……修習慧力……。
  修習念覺支,……修習擇法覺支……修習活力覺支……修習喜覺支……修習寧靜覺支……修習定覺支……修習平靜覺支……。
   修習正見……修習正志……修習正語……修習正業……修習正命……修習正精進……修習正念……修習正定……,比丘們!這被稱為中道。
  比丘們!這是三種道。」

  「念住、正勤,神足、根,
   力、覺支、道,應用於[行]道。」

   157-163. “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, paṭipadā. Katamā tisso? Āgāḷhā paṭipadā, nijjhāmā paṭipadā, majjhimā paṭipadā. Katamā ca, bhikkhave, āgāḷhā paṭipadā? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco evaṃvādī hoti evaṃdiṭṭhi– ‘natthi kāmesu doso’ti. So kāmesu pātabyataṃ āpajjati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, āgāḷhā paṭipadā.
   “Katamā ca, bhikkhave, nijjhāmā paṭipadā? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco acelako hoti muttācāro, hatthāpalekhano, na ehibhadantiko, na tiṭṭhabhadantiko, nābhihaṭaṃ na uddissakataṃ na nimantanaṃ sādiyati. So na kumbhimukhā paṭiggaṇhāti, na kaḷopimukhā paṭiggaṇhāti na eḷakamantaraṃ na daṇḍamantaraṃ na musalamantaraṃ na dvinnaṃ bhuñjamānānaṃ na gabbhiniyā na pāyamānāya na purisantaragatāya na saṅkittīsu na yattha sā upaṭṭhito hoti na yattha makkhikā saṇḍasaṇḍacārinī na macchaṃ na maṃsaṃ na suraṃ na merayaṃ, na thusodakaṃ pivati. So ekāgāriko vā hoti ekālopiko, dvāgāriko vā hoti dvālopiko… sattāgāriko vā hoti sattālopiko; ekissāpi dattiyā yāpeti, dvīhipi dattīhi yāpeti… sattahipi dattīhi yāpeti; ekāhikampi āhāraṃ āhāreti, dvāhikampi āhāraṃ āhāreti… sattāhikampi āhāraṃ āhāreti– iti evarūpaṃ addhamāsikampi pariyāyabhattabhojanānuyogamanuyutto viharati. So sākabhakkhopi hoti, sāmākabhakkhopi hoti, nīvārabhakkhopi hoti, daddulabhakkhopi hoti, haṭabhakkhopi hoti kaṇhabhakkhopi hoti, ācāmabhakkhopi hoti, piññākabhakkhopi hoti, tiṇabhakkhopi hoti, gomayabhakkhopi hoti, vanamūlaphalāhāro yāpeti pavattaphalabhojī. So sāṇānipi dhāreti, masāṇānipi dhāreti, chavadussānipi dhāreti, paṃsukūlānipi dhāreti, tirīṭānipi dhāreti, ajinampi dhāreti, ajinakkhipampi dhāreti, kusacīrampi dhāreti vākacīrampi dhāreti, phalakacīrampi dhāreti, kesakambalampi dhāreti, vāḷakambalampi dhāreti, ulūkapakkhikampi dhāreti, kesamassulocakopi hoti kesamassulocanānuyogamanuyutto, ubbhaṭṭhakopi hoti āsanapaṭikkhitto, ukkuṭikopi hoti ukkuṭikappadhānamanuyutto, kaṇṭakāpassayikopi hoti kaṇṭakāpassaye seyyaṃ kappeti, sāyatatiyakampi udakorohanānuyogamanuyutto viharati– iti evarūpaṃ anekavihitaṃ kāyassa ātāpanaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto viharati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, nijjhāmā paṭipadā.
   “Katamā ca, bhikkhave, majjhimā paṭipadā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, majjhimā paṭipadā. Imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso paṭipadā”ti.
   “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, paṭipadā. Katamā tisso? Āgāḷhā paṭipadā, nijjhāmā paṭipadā, majjhimā paṭipadā. Katamā ca, bhikkhave, āgāḷhā paṭipadā …pe… ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, āgāḷhā paṭipadā.
   “Katamā ca, bhikkhave, nijjhāmā paṭipadā …pe… ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, nijjhāmā paṭipadā.
   “Katamā ca, bhikkhave, majjhimā paṭipadā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ anuppādāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati; uppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ pahānāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati; anuppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ uppādāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati; uppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripūriyā chandaṃ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati….
   “Chandasamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti vīriyasamādhi …pe… cittasamādhi …pe… vīmaṃsāsamādhipadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti …pe….
   “Saddhindriyaṃ bhāveti… vīriyindriyaṃ bhāveti… satindriyaṃ bhāveti… samādhindriyaṃ bhāveti… paññindriyaṃ bhāveti….
   “Saddhābalaṃ bhāveti… vīriyabalaṃ bhāveti… satibalaṃ bhāveti… samādhibalaṃ bhāveti… paññābalaṃ bhāveti….
   “Satisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… vīriyasambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… pītisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… samādhisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti….
   “Sammādiṭṭhiṃ bhāveti… sammāsaṅkappaṃ bhāveti… sammāvācaṃ bhāveti… sammākammantaṃ bhāveti sammā-ājīvaṃ bhāveti… sammāvāyāmaṃ bhāveti… sammāsatiṃ bhāveti… sammāsamādhiṃ bhāveti…. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, majjhimā paṭipadā. Imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso paṭipadā”ti.

   Tassuddānaṃ–
   Satipaṭṭhānaṃ sammappadhānaṃ, iddhipādindriyena ca;
   Balaṃ bojjhaṅgo maggo ca, paṭipadāya yojayeti.
